  • got my ADS package, what else should i get?

well i got home from work and my package from ADS was waiting for me it contained the following:
    1 backing plate w67da
    1 finishing pad w9207
    2 polishing pads w8207
    2 3 packs (6 total) supreme shine x2020
    2 scratchX 2.0 g10307-2
    1 3 pack smooth clay g1001
    1 12oz sample bottle of m105 (DA approved) m10512
2 quick interior detail wipes g7516
i endurance high gloss tire gel tda3
    1 12oz sample bottle of speed glaze 80 m8012

now, besides a bottle of m205 that i could have sworn i bought but my order form tells me i forgot (and i believe i did forget not saying they jipped me on it) what else should i look into getting? i have a PC 7424 and currently have 3 CCS pads and a backing plate for them. i have 1 orange light cut pad, 1 white polishing pad and 1 black finishing pad. i already have a few bottles of NXT 2.0 and some mequiars cleaner wax paste. i have 2 bottles of this pinnicale XMT stuff, 1 being a level 2 (ranges from 1-4) swirl remover the other being a finishing glaze (the guy at drivers seat said it was some of their best stuff, and it was kinda cheap too).....any input would be greatly appriciated. i do not do this for a living, but i am attempting to start up a side business and hopefully just getting 1-2 cars a weekend would make me happy.

    thanks!

You are going to need something to clay with, if you dont have any QD/Final Inspection, etc.

And then of course washing/drying supples.

List looks pretty good and I'm sure you'll put it all to good use. I'll assume your question pertains primarily to paint since I see no items nor references to washing products, detailing tools, etc.

In addition to the above...if sticking with a PC...I'd grab a 3.5" backing plate and some 4" CCS pads for tight areas where the larger pads won't fit flush. Unlike a Flex, the orbital polishers like the PC and G110 don't have force out towards the edge of the pad so just angling it into a spot isn't going to do much. You either need hand application or a smaller pad. Those 4" pads sure do come in handy.

As for products, I'd get a spray bottle and some IPA (isopropyl alchohol) for wipedowns in between passes of polishes. A sample size of D151 Paint Reconditioning Cream is nice especially if you're doing detail work for cash. Some customers want light correction but can really only pay for a one-pass type job and D151 is an awesome one-step product (polish/protectant in one). Try it out and see...

Some more Supreme Shine towels maybe as I tend to go thru them pretty quick on a polishing job and wouldn't want to have to stop to wash or use inferior towels that might scratch the paint and ruin what I've been working on.

I also see you have the clay but no lube. Meg's Last Touch in the 32oz sample size from ADS is very nice diluted 1:1 and used as a clay lube and comes out much cheaper that way then continually running to the store to buy Quik Detailer.

The Pinnacle XMT line is ok for light duty and uses diminishing style abrasives so be aware of that when switching between them and M105/M205 to alter your technique. I'm not a big fan but have used their XMT Pad Conditioner as a pad primer (like Final Inspection).

If you already have the stuff I mentioned then disregard but these are some of the essentials I would add to what is listed above. Hope this helps...

Re: got my ADS package, what else should i get?

for soap i have some gold class, i like to get NXT soap, but it seems to go fast around here and cant find it as often or readily as the gold class. i have a few microfiber wash mits, a few buckets, tire scrubbers and that stuff.

what would the order of my pads be, most aggressive to least, would it be
          orange light cut CCS
          white polishing CCS
          mequiars polishing
          black finishing CCS
          mequiars finishing

not sure how the mequiars to CCS pads compare in aggressiveness.

what does diminishing style abrasives mean?

i see the mequiar pads can be machine washed which is cool i think...can the CCS pads? and what detergent would i use to wash them in the washer? i have some CCS pad cleaner powder stuff already.

i will def look into the 4" pads and also plan to eventually graduate to a more powerful machine IF i get enough business to justify it. like i said, my goal for now would be to just get 1-2 cars a weekend. the more the merier i know and eventually would like to be booked solid, but for now thats all i really want/need. i dont mind spending hours on a car if its the only car for the day, but once i get more than 1 car needing a decent timed detail per day i will def look into more time friendly machines .

Sounds like you have what you need for the most part...

what would the order of my pads be, most aggressive to least, would it be
            orange light cut CCS
            white polishing CCS
            mequiars polishing

            mequiars finishing
not sure how the mequiars to CCS pads compare in aggressiveness.
In my experience it would be in order of the list above:

            Orange CCS
            Meguiar's Polishing
            White CCS
            Meguiar's Finishing/Black CCS

what does diminishing style abrasives mean?
Do a quick search of SMAT and DAT on the foum and you'll find pages on the differences and which products fall into which category. M105/M205 are SMAT products (super micro-abrasive technology) while the XMT polishes utilize DAT technolgoy (dimisnishing abrasives). Basically, the DAT products need to be completely "broken down" to the base oils before stopping as you start off with high aggresivity and gradually wear down the abrasives to progressively less aggressive abrasivity. With SMAT products you have a linear aggresivity and can stop anytime.

i see the mequiar pads can be machine washed which is cool i think...can the CCS pads? and what detergent would i use to wash them in the washer? i have some CCS pad cleaner powder stuff already.
I don't personally machine wash my CCS pads. I have a 5-gallon bucket half-filled with water and some of the powder pad cleaner and a touch of Dawn dish soap. When I am done with a pad I place it in the bucket and allow it to soak. When done with the job I hand wash them in the sink with as hot water as I can stand and then allow to air dry...comes out perfect. Meguiar's pads should be cared for as per manufacturer recommendations.

i will def look into the 4" pads and also plan to eventually graduate to a more powerful machine IF i get enough business to justify it. like i said, my goal for now would be to just get 1-2 cars a weekend. the more the merier i know and eventually would like to be booked solid, but for now thats all i really want/need. i dont mind spending hours on a car if its the only car for the day, but once i get more than 1 car needing a decent timed detail per day i will def look into more time friendly machines .
The 4" pads and corresponding backing plate (3.5") will have a value that becomes readily apparent once you start doing a few cars.

Re: got my ADS package, what else should i get?

thanks bounty! the SMAT and DAT stuff makes sense now, but i will def do some research so i can become better versed in this stuff. you never know when a customer is smarter than you think and might ask you some questions seeing if you know your head from your @$$ lol.

yeah, the 4" pads and backing plate i will buy now (very soon) but the flex or other more expensive tools is what i might wait for. i kinda worded it wrong i think up above making it sound like i will buy the pads and the new machine later on.

Anytime, brother! Using the SMAT verus DAT lineup is one in technique change and experience. Since you already have both you can experiment a little and get firsthand knowledge. Just remember DAT products will extend working time in most cases (especially with a PC) so plan and charge accordingly.

It's a shame you're so far north or I'd drive up and let you play with the 4" pads on the PC and run my Flex thru it's paces a bit. Maybe the next Broward customer I have I'll send you a PM and you can meet me there and try them out...

Re: got my ADS package, what else should i get?

anyone know how the XMT level 2 swirl remover compares to the 80? what i am asking is, which is more aggressive if anyone knows. if i do a test spot with the 80 and it doesnt remove the very faint swirls and water spots, would the XMT be a good second test spot?

also, i should be using just the polishing pads, right? i used the cutting pad and scratch x 2.0 on my white ranger, but that is my not my baby like my car. i am trying to get the swirls/water spots off my baby which is a black 07 mustang....i do not want to put more scratches or take off way more than needed to get it to look sexified again

I dont know about the XMT.

Yes, you want to try the polishing pad as much as possible.
