  • Cleaning your pad on the fly

Anyone know of any good online instructional video for cleaning your pad on the fly?

If not, how about one of the good chaps at Megs post one for those of us too far away to attend a class? Thanks.

I don't know of a video, but there's really nothing to it. Drape a terry cloth over your left hand (fingers extended) and hold the DA in your right. I set the speed to 3 and press the DA into my terry-towel covered left hand palm. As the pad spins, lightly grab at the pad by slight closing your fingers around the outer rim while continuing to press the center of the pad into the palm of your hand. About 30 seconds should adequately clean your pad.

But doesn't this shoot the terry out of your hand?

It seems to me, the second the pad touches the terry, boom... it shoots off my hand.

Not at all. Maybe with a rotary, but not a DA. Remember, the DA is oscillating, not spinning in a true circle like a rotary. While there is some slight rotational force with a DA, it won't shoot the terry out of your hand as long as you maintain a firm grip on the pad. Also, you don't squeeze the trigger until the face of the pad is pressed against your terry covered hand.

I agree with ClearlyCoated. That's the way I do it.

It is the way I have been doing it. At first the terry skips a little. But the learning curve is very fast.

i just got into the DA world today and bought a package set at drivers seat. in the package it has this powder soap stuff and it says to soak your pads in that for 15 min before letting it air dry. is that not needed? can i do this every time i need to clean them? or is this just a temp clean until i can soak them?

Cleaning "on the fly" is just that, cleaning during the polishing process. You're removing excess product to extend working time with that particular pad. Pads will get gummed up with clearcoat (the material you're removing) and excess product and will lose "bite" or cut after a few panels or sections. Cleaning on the fly avoids this for a period of time. The powder in your kit is to soak the pads after polishing before final hand cleaning.
