  • Taping

I'm new to the G110 and am trying to learn. I have one question: Why do people tape when polishing? Is it to protect the pad or the arts you don't want polished?

    Re: Taping

Getting waxes and polishes on (either splatter or by running into) trim pieces can be a pain to clean up.

But it can protect the pad a bit as well.

Also a good idea to tape edges and known thin spots in the paint. This is to protect from the chance of paint-burn, however small that chance may be.

A G110 isn't going to be burning through paint

I once put swirls in my paint just to see what it looked like.

        I don't always detail cars, but when I do, I prefer Meguiar's.
        Remove swirls my friends.

It wont 'burn' through, but you still want to avoid sharp edges and known thin spots, esp on old paints, because your polish/pad can still wear though.

            Re: Taping

The amount of time you will save on cleanup is worth the effort to tape.
Plus taking extra precautions on thin spots on the paint is also worth it.

              Re: Taping

Personally, I tape for a couple of different reasons.

#1-Keep product out of small area's that are a paint to clean up

#2-Keeps the Rotary or DA off of the trim peices. And yes it is possible for a DA to hurt a piece of trim(ask me how I know )

#3-Keep the pad a little cleaner. Some trim pieces will discolor the pad and turn it black. Probably wouldn't affect the performance of the pad or product your working, but I can't stand it(OCD?)

              #4-Blue tape looks cool!!!!
