  • A little help....

Haven't been here in a while...even then just a lurker sucking up knowledge!!

Anyway, it has been some time since I had an opportunity to really clean up the truck and I am having some difficulty.

Everything else cleaned and polished up nice with the M83 (3 to apply; 5 to work it in).

I have (what looks like) very bad hazing and spotting on the hood and on the top of the cap on my truck.

Considering how good the rest of the truck looks, this is really unacceptable, but I don't know what the next more aggressive step would be...thank you all in advance for your advice!!!

what pads are you using? Might possibly just get more cut with a different pad. The Ultimate Compound found OTC is stronger than 83.
    Fergy-

You're only as good as your last detail

Let's hope this isn't the beginning of clear coat failure.

If you polish a section of the hood with M83 does it look better?
Does it look clear like the side panels?

If not, that's not a good sign. If the problem is topical you can fix it by simply abrading enough of the top surface off.

When it comes to clear coat failure, there's basically two kinds, there's the kind you see where the clear layer lifts off the color coat layer, this is delamination. The other kind of clear coat failure is when the entire layer of clear starts to fail or go bad and it usually starts to turn cloudy and then to white and the it will flake off and look like your car has a really bad skin rash. This type of clear coat failure when the clear layer starts to turn cloudy, the cloudy look is throughout the entire thickness of the layer, not just on the top or topical. Thus more and more abrading won't fix the problem.

So if M83 isn't making the hood look like the side panels then this isn't a good sign. You can try something more aggressive and cross your fingers this solves the problem or even a very oily product like M80 and see if this restores some clarity.

Keep in mind from your description, the problem is only on the hood and the hood is a horizontal panel exposed to the sun and the engine heat, two bad things over time.

      How does the roof look?

One of the pictures in this archive of pictures of clear coat failure is a hood shot of the beginning of clear coat failure. It's a black hood with whitish sections forming in the center.

I hope not!!! I was in a parking lot accident back in 12/07...some guy blew a stop sign and hit the passenger front corner...the hood only had minor damage and was repaired rather than replaced...

Well, I used W8006 first and then did a second pass with a W 7006...it looked 'better' than it did, but not much.

Actually it looks fine....but I am having the same problem with my ARE cap...

          Again, thanks!!
