  • Used a DA for first time today..

Got to use my new DA (UDM) today. Can't believe what I was missing.

Truck has some swirling and a couple deeper scratches. Used the new SwirlX with a LC white pad first. Then used some 205 with a Megs yellow. The chart shows SwirlX to be more aggressive but IMO and limited skills the 205 did just as good. Maybe it's the pads. I do not like the LC CCS pads. So I'm going to sell those and buy Megs. I need to get some 105 or Ultimate Compound to tackle a couple of the more stubborn spots. All in all I'm very pleased. I did find that the 205 is way easier to work with than the SwirlX. Then again it could be the pads. The 205 had a much longer working time. The new SwirlX is SMAT also right? I did overcome that with a couple light sprays of QC on the pad when I noticed slight dusting. Seemed to help some. Never really had that problem with the 205. Topped it off with NXT 2.0.

Here's a couple of pics. No before pics because I wasn't planning on doing the whole truck but one thing let to another.

That is how it always is. "one thing led to another" then all of a sudden you do your whole vehicle. Well the truck looks great. Congrats on your first detail using a machine.

            Thanks!

After searching/reading more on Ultimate Compound, I think I'll just go pick some of that up local and try it on the more stubborn areas.

Nice work on the truck, machine cleaning and polishing is definitely a better and faster way to create a show car finish as compared to working by hand, especially on clear coat paints.

What was it about the CCS pads that you didn't like?

Mainly the pockets. I primed the pad by applying a thin even coat over the entire pad with product. I put product on the pad then spread it out evenly with my finger. This put the excess product into the pockets. The problem is the pockets are also on the edge of the pad which creates a half pocket. If that makes since. Once you start the machine the product that resides in the outer pockets slings all over the place. I'm guessing here, but they probably just die cut these pads out of master sheets. Thus you can't avoid having these pockets on the outer edge of the pad. A better design would be to leave a 1/4" or so ring around the outside of the pad that doesn't have these pockets. The product is suppose to be released out of the non absorbing pockets with pressure. I would have to apply so much pressure to release product that the machine would quit rotating. Yet there would still be a lot of product in the pockets after that pass. Waste.

The Megs pad was easier for me to work with. It just felt smoother and it seemed the machine worked easier with it. I'm sure a lot of this has to do with my inexperience. In the hands of a professional they may be excellent. Hope that explains it a bit.

                        To add on to this...

I've read that youre supposed to stop the machine, then apply more pressure. BUT even when i did that, the polishing/cutting (white/orange) pads are so stiff that product still wont be forced out of the pockets. I've pushed so hard that the panel i was working on started to cave in.

Then i did the "clean on the fly" technique and would end up scooping the product out of the pockets, wasting product.

yeah, nice work, spotless..! question for you what do you use to clean the bottoms of the front doors and the lower bedside behind the rear wheels. I ask this because i see you do not have mud flaps and neither do i, there is always s**t that gets on there and some does not come of with washing, i did not want to use clay in that area as it would get "loaded up" quick

                          thanks

Mine wasn't too bad there. The truck only has 20k miles on it. I bought it used from a guy who only used it as his "weekend/vacation" truck. So those areas weren't too bad, yet. They will get worse after being at mx tracks all year plus gravel roads getting to riding areas. I've seriously thought about putting mud flaps on it but I hate the look. Anyway, I used a wash mit with dish washing detergent on the areas behind the rear wheel. Then used the buffing pad that came with the UDM and 205 to take care of the remaining ****.
