  • Pads

    Hello,

Sorry to ask another question, but I'm going to order some pads tonight. I currently have 2 W8006's (soft buff 1.0), and 2 W9006's (soft buff 1.0).

Anyway, I was thinking about moving up to the new 2.0's, but I wasn't sure how many you'd all recommend that I order?

Lastly, will the W8006 remove swirls pretty decently? How many passes will I most likely need to make with it? I was going to use that pad with the Swirl X, unless someone knows a better polish that will remove the scratches more efficiently. I was thinking about M105 and M205, but I'd rather have a one step polish if that's possible.

    Re: Pads

Well, they are washable. But it is kind of hard to stop and wash your pad in the middle of the afternoon when detailing, plus let it dry. So you still have to have enough to do your work with.

If you car is in good shape, you can apply a cleaner/polish with one pad to the whole car. But for defect removal, you will likely want to have 2 - 3 available.

Polishes and waxes can have 1 pad each for the whole car. And a cutting pad with some MF bonnets to remove wax, if you feel like it.

#105 and #205 are the quite new products, and seem to be working very well together. Do a test spot with #205 first of course.

SwirlX is a cleaner only, like #105. #205 is a cleaner/polish as I understand it. So not quite sure what you meant by one step?

      Re: Pads

Like Matt said, it helps to have at least a few polishing pads, (the yellow foam pads), on hand for going over an entire car. Clean your pads on the fly often and this will help to maximize their performance.

As for which product is going to work best?

      Meguiar's teaches the philosophy of,

"Use the least aggressive product to get the job done"

So here's the deal, you won't know if the least aggressive product will get the job done until you go out into your garage and test it out on your car's paint and then inspect the results of the test section as compared to the surrounding paint.

How effective any product designed to remove defects will be affected by 3 thing,s

      Paint hardness
      Depth of the defects
Your skills and abilities to work a product by hand or machine.

We can't control any of the above three factors but our compounds, paint cleaners and cleaner/polishes are designed to remove defects, this means they are designed to remove paint.

How effective they are is dependent on the above 3 factors.

If you find your first choice of product isn't working effectively enough or fast enough then you can switch to a more aggressive product.

SwirlX and Ultimate Compound are such fantastic products if you're a do-it-yourselfers when it comes to taking care of your cars then it's actually a great idea to have both of these products in your tool arsenal and this will allow you to have at least 2 products designed to remove defects in your garage to test with and then use according to the one that is doing the best job.

Remember, the reason for using the least aggressive product to get the job done is because by doing this you will remove the defects while leaving the most amount of paint on you car to last you over the service life or the car.

Just to clarify, SwirlX would fall into the Cleaner/Polish category.

        Re: Pads

Is SwirlX similar to #80 as far as polishing oils? That is to say a pure polish may not make a big difference after it?
