  • question about DA polishes

hey guys, sorry for all the questions but seems like the more i read, the more questions pop in my head...

i already ordered the G220, meguiars foam pads (yellow and red), #83 and #80 polishes, but im still in doubt about whats steps should i follow to have the best results.. here are my questions:

if i had sucess removing the swirls and fine scratches with #83 and red foam pad, do i need to follow up with #80 on a yellow pad right? then, i go direct to the wax or its better to use a glaze (like #7) on a yellow pad and then move on to the wax?

another question, i have seem a lot of videos on youtube about DA polishing, mostly with another branded products and in one of the videos (i think its the on with pinnacle products) the guy sprayed a litle bit of "pad conditioner" on the pad before aplying the polish. do you guys do this? if so, can i do it with meguiars quick detailer?

thats all (at least for now )...

    thanks again for the help

    Re: question about DA polishes

Hiya, it is recomended to start least agressive so #80 and polishing pad would be the first attempt, followed by #83 on the yellow pad, followed by red pad, it will depend on the paint condition and how easy the paint is to work with (whats the car?), you can follow up with #80 on the polishing pad if needed (say if the paint was hazy after a cutting pad and #83) but it depends, you can use a glaze if you want (DA or hand i think) or straight to wax. Moistening the pad is optional with DA's but sometimes an attempt to keep dusting down (yes you could use Megs QD)

Have a read of these, its alot to take in but should help:

      Re: question about DA polishes

hi christian, thanks for the help.

yep, i know about start with the less agressive and then moving on to a more agressive setup, i am just wondering if i need to use a more agressive compound, will i need to go with #80 on a finish pad and then glaze/finish pad and than, wax.

i already had the sequence you posted on mind so i think im going on the right direction.
      thanks again for the tips

        Re: question about DA polishes

#83 can finish down ready for LSP (wax) but not every time, depends on a few factors, if you try it and you are satisfied go to waxing/ if not satisfied refine the finish with #80 polish/finishing pads.

        Heres one of my jobs:

        Before:

        After #83 w/ polishing pad:

        After #83/80/Gold Class Liquid Wax:

in this case the badly swirled finish took an aggressive product such as #83 to correct but the soft paint meant that #80 refined the finish so it looked much deeper. It hard to say what any car will need until you start testing products out on them.

stunning results you got it mate!

my car is a GM (opel) vectra (2001), i dont know if the paint is hard or soft (yet) but i will start with the least agressive on a test spot and work my way up if necessary (hope not). while my car looks shiny, its covered with swirls and some light scratches..

question: you did not "feel the need" to use #83 on the red cutting pad (W7000) right?

            Re: question about DA polishes

Again it is unknown how hard the paint will be, as a rough guide Vauxhall/Opel will tend to be on the soft side, but you still cant say, the Car above is a Vauxhall Astra 2006 in sapphire black metallic, this was my third car with the machine and at the time i only had Polishing and Finishing pads, i was relatively new at machining (Sonus SFX2 and SFX3 pads have been my choice). If it had not worked with #83/SFX2 pad then i would have stepped things up.
