  • G110 vs air powered DA sander vs rotary

Trying to sift out which tools to purchase. Air powered DA / G110 or a rotary?? or a combination (I do have a compressor for the DA (puts out 19cfm at 90psi) (looking at the Hutchens Water Bug III DA or the Mirka Bulldog). The task would be to color sand my project (37 ford street rod).. The 37 has at least 2-3 coats of clear. Other projects would be to detail family drivers.

A 1937 Chevy has a lot of body curves so you'll have to hand sand many of these. For the flat panels any quality DA Sander will give you great performance and should last a long time. I have a Dynabrade Air Powered DA Sander but Mirka makes a number of very good DA Sanders also.

Quality sanding papers are a must...

I have seen "throw" specs given such as 3/32" ect. on air powered DA's. Is there an optimum throw for color sanding a car? It seems like smaller gives a finer finish?

Can the Mirka pads fit most air sanders?. I have an old National Detroit I used to prep the car for paint.(have no idea what the "Throw" is) It has a Meg's W8006 on it now. How does the Mirka pads attach, will I need some sort of adapter backing plate?

Thanks for all your help and others on ths forum. (Its a 37 Ford Hump Back I will be working on. Ready for color sanding)

3/16" Orbit is usually for general sanding work and 3/32" Orbit is for fine sanding. I a perfect world you would make your first cuts using a 3/16" Orbit DA Sander and do your finish sanding using a Finishing Sander with a 3/32" Orbit.

You can do all the sanding steps with either one, with the larger throw sanders you'll sand or remove paint faster but the buff-out might take longer and with the smaller throw sanders you won't sand as fast, that is remove paint as fast but the buff-out will be faster.

        Yes.

Velcro interface, you'll need a Velcro Backing plate that matches the diameter of the sand paper you use.

My Dynabrade uses the 6" diameter system, that is 6" diameter backing plate, interface pad and Abralon disks.

Be sure to pick up some M105 for any areas where you'll need to remove your sanding marks by hand.
