  • Order of detailing

    Hey all,
I just bought a PC a few days ago and am about to go buy some polishes to use with it. The guy who I bought it from highly recommended the #9 for me due to it being safe. I was wondering if this would be a proper detail order.

    1. Wash car
    2. Clay bar
    3. Fully dry
    4. #9 swirl remover with yellow pad
    5. #7 glaze yellow pad
    6. #26 yellow wax white pad

Do I need to wash the car inbetween any of these steps? What is this whole dawn soap people keep talking about?

    Thanks in advance.

Sounds like a good plan, you should consider using #80 Speed Glaze instead of #9. #80 is a safe product, and tends to leave a great finish ready for wax.

You don't need to use Dawn dish soap if you are going to clay. The clay should take care of any wax already on the paint. Good luck with your detailing project.

      Welcome to MOL rinosaur!

#9 Swirl remover is indeed safe, but to be perfectly honest with the use of a PC you will likely remove very little with that product. #9 is great for a very final step for ultra high gloss and perfection (removal of holograms, hazing, etc), but you will likely want a regimen of Meguiar's #83, followed by #80...both on polishing pads.

Of course, Meguiar's always preaches to use the least aggressive method possible- so start with the use of #80 and assess your progress. If some swirls remain after a couple of passes, kick it up to the #83 on a new polishing pad.

As for washing between steps- no need. Some people do like to use a towel (soft microfiber is great) and some Isopropyl alcohol to wipe down any possible leftover product or oils from the polishes before proceeding to the next step. This ensures that the true condition of the paint matches what your eye sees.

As for the "Dawn" wash- there is no need. Dawn is not intended for cars, and many believe it can strip vital oils from surfaces on the vehicle. I would suggest Meguiar's Gold Class or NXT Soap as they are easy to find, and both work great.

      Good luck!

        It's a good start.

Although use M26 with a tan pad or 9 series pad.

Dawn soap is said to remove wax but, the clay bar will do it and I really don't like to use dish soap (anymore )

He said to use #9 as it's one of the least aggressive, in your arsenal you may want to get some #80, #83 to combat those harder swirl marks.

Nope, no need to wash inbetween steps. Some like to wash after claying but I don't think it's necessary.

Watcha working on? Maybe we can zero in on products you need better

        And! to MOL!

Ok thanks guys for the info. I do have moderate swirls and after reading the description of the #9 I probably do need something a bit more powerful. Car is an 01 Mercedes C240 maroon color. Can I only get the 80 or 83 online or is there a store I can go to buy either? (don't feel like waiting lol)

ADS is quick as is Meguiars.com. Meguiars is also having a 10% off coupon (located on home page of this forum "Carguy") until the end of November.
