  • DA Polisher and clear coat paint

I have a question about the long term effect polishing a car has on the clear coat?

Suppose I have swirls throughout the car and I use #80 or #83, whichever the job calls for, to fix the swirls. I do a wonderful job and then in the six months following, I take the car Schmucko's car wash repeatedly and I get fresh new batch of swirls.

I hit the car again the my G110 and some 80 or 83 and I keep the cycle going.

Is this process going to speed up clear coat failure? Is it possible that my continued polishing of the paint with even a light abrasive is going to EVENTUALLY take away all clear coat?

    Just curious.

On the other hand, I would assume something like #7 Show Car Glaze would have NO effect of removing clear, right? What about NXT 2.0?

    Thanks in advance.

You have a finite amount of clear on the car but for most people the problem is not removing too much paint but not removing enough paint, as in if a person can't get the swirls out of the paint, another way of saying this would be this person can't remove enough paint.

DA Polishers are pretty gentle to the paint in both action and in the amount of paint they are actually removing, at least compared to a rotary buffer, so while yes each time you get aggressive with your car's clear coat finish you are removing small amounts of paint, it's still not that much paint and clear coat failure over time because you polish often is probably less of a concern than clear coat failure because you don't do anything at all to maintain the clear coat.

Here's a thread that touches on this topic here...

How much paint am I removing?

The best thing to do is to do everything you can to prevent instilling more swirls and scratches into the paint so you don't have to remove them down the road.

Neither will remove clear coat paint when used correctly.

#7 is non-abrasive and NXT doesn't contain the type of cleaners used to remove defects.
