  • PC and polish/wax questions

I recently bought the PC 7336 from lowes. From what I've read I'll need the meg kit
    here

I need to polish up an old 91 mazda 626. I believe the clear coat is gone from the hood. Am I screwed at this point or is there anything I can do to at least make it feel glossy smooth?

the second question I have is whether or not I'll be able to make use of the waxes I have. I have the bottle that says "original" cleaner wax. I also have DC#2, NXT, and color X. Can I make do with any combination or should I really be springing for a DACP?

If the clear coat on the hood is gone, there is probably nothing you can do at this point. Most basecoat, (the color coat under the clear coat), do not polish to a high gloss, they depend upon the clear coat to give them their gloss. So once the clear coat is gone, the base coat will look flat and no amount of polishing will make the glossy. It's kind of the nature of the beast.

As far as polishing up the rest of the finish goes, you list,

    Original Cleaner/Wax
    Deep Crystal Polish (Step 2)
    NXT Tech Wax
    ColorX

    In order of aggressiveness,

    1. ColorX is the most aggressive
    2. Original Cleaner/Wax is next in aggressiveness

    * The Deep Crystal Polish is a non-aggressive pure polish
    * The NXT Tech Wax contains a sleight amount of a specialized cleaner but not enough to be placed in the cleaner/wax category and is best used on a finish that is in new, like new condition or previously cleaned and polished.

With the selection you have, you should be able to restore the finish using the ColorX first, follow with the Deep Crystal Polish and then apply two coats of the NXT Tech Wax.

You should use a dedicated foam pad of each of these products as it's not a good practice to cross-contaminate products onto the same foam pad. This means you need three foam pads. For the ColorX and the Deep Crystal Polish, Meguiar's would recommend the W-8006 foam polishing pad. For the NXT Tech Wax Meguiar's would recommend the W-9006 foam Finishing pad.

You can purchase all three of these in kit form, here's the part number.

    Set of 3 pads - WDAV99-B

Use the 3.0 to 5.0 setting on the PC for the ColorX
Use the 3.0 to 4.0 setting for the Deep Crystal Polish
Use the 1.0 to 3.0 setting for the NXT Tech Wax

    Hope this helps...

Mike, that helps alot. The link you posted with the 3 pads... would it not be better to use the link i posted that was for the pads + backing plate? And I say this because I do not have the velcro backing plate and the pads you posted require velcro.

unless you suggest I buy some velcro and make my own?

        My mistake,

With the Lowe's PC you will need the Velcro backing plate also.
