  • MVP 6" Polisher/Buffer (56k Review)

Has every one that has read my other thread which you can find here You will notice that I have been asking about what I should get. Well one of my friends decided to pick me up a MVP 6" polisher/Buffer from walmart for about 20USD.

I mostly tested this on the hood and the truck, which, was actually pretty dull.

So I decided to give it a spin earlier today and here is my review:

Well when I received the buffer I was kind apprehensive about it and kind of gave him this look in the process. Well of course not being rude I took it and said "Thank You" and decided to give it a run this week end to see what it can do.

Well when the rain and everything stopped. I pulled it out of the box and it to my surprise it came with the following Items.

    1x Wool bonnet
    1x Microfiber Bonnet
    1x Foam Pad Bonnet

The foam pad it glued to the backplate.. so this was actually a down fall.

(It didn't come with the polisher)

and of course the buffer/polisher. Well if you can see it you will notice that the cord is very short meaning that you have to buy an extension cord which will run you about 12-13 USD.

Well after I gave the car a complete thorough bath using Gold Class shampoo and conditioner and a Lamb's wool glove. I then dried it off with 2x water magnetites following 1x microfiber towel to prep it for the Deep Crystal paint cleaner and polisher.

After the car was completely dried I went and got the MVP polisher/Buffer for a good round and to my surprise the wool bonnet gave me a good fight trying to get it on the buffer due to the backplate turning and actually being a little bigger and thicker then what I expected. After I got it on I got the Deep Crystal Polish ready to go. Well after I got it going I decided to do a section before I have the whole car a good beating.

From what I encountered and what you can see it went on pretty good and didn't give me a fight or anything. It also dispersed the polish very thin covering a good section and also gave you a good picture on what is cover (Which is pretty hard to do by hand). The buffer also worked the polish in with little effort giving you time to go over the areas that you missed. Has you can see by the picture from above.

This is the result after the first pass and thought it actually was pretty good but was not really up to my standard so I decided to go over it a couple more times and this is what I got after each pass:

I know you can't really see the results but I know I could and after the third pass I was pretty satisfied with what I got, so I moved on to the truck and one of the finders.

I should have gotten shots of the car after I washed it but I forgot too, but, it was pretty dirty (and trust me with the Texas weather it was pretty bad).

I gave the finder a good go and this is the result. It was a little duller then it was and I shot it with about 2x coats of polish (It was actually an improvement from what it was)

It was hard to get the buffer in the corners due to no handle and no actual way to get it completely under the passenger side mirror, giving it a little dull area where I could not reach and had to do it by hand:

After I was done with the finder I moved onto the trunk... Which I have to say was in pretty bad shape do the dullness (I tried to do it by hand and didn't get any good results)

Here is a shot of the trunk before I hit it with 3 coats of polish:

    Before

    Second Coat

    After

It came out a lot better then it did before I started and I was very pleased with the results.

Here is a picture of the complete front of the car... It's the same one has posted but with out the writing.

After everything is said in done the results where not that bad. I was expecting worse from something like this, but, I was actually surprised.

Here is a picture after fighting to get it on and after the constant vibrations (With no contact with the surface) and Cleaning your pad on the fly. When I did the cleaning on the fly.. it became difficult at times.

The over all experience of this buffer is.... "Drum Roll, Please" a surprising 5/10.

Pros and cons of the buffer.

    Pros:

    Does what it says

Even flow of wax and any cleaners and or waxes

Pretty powerful for something this small (Surprising 2600RPM)

Can and will hide "Some Scratches" if used correctly.

The wool, micro and sponge bonnets are about 6-7USD (Not as bad as I thought)

Can't really beat the price (9-16USD)

    Cons

Hard to get into some spots

Hard to get the bonnets on and can cause them to tear if not correctly applied.

Not to be used for swirls or for large deep scratches "Well not remove them"

If you apply the bonnets and turn it on with out contact it will cause the buffer to spin out of control and cause a lot of vibration.

Can't remove the backplate or the foam applicator.

    Hard to find foam and wool bonnets {Not in walmart, just the microfiber bonnets}

Has a lock for the power button instead of a trigger (Can cause the vibrations and shift of the bonnets)

I know this is not the best review but this is my first and I did what I could to make it understandable to every one.

    Thank you for your time.

If you have any question feel free to ask.

Nice job with the review . I actually have one from walmart and it was only about 8 or 9 dollars. I don't use it for that type of work but i do use it for applying my waxes due to it being small and lightweight i find it easier than moving around with a different type of buffer plus you cant beat the price and mine has been going strong for about 6 months and no problems but just because i said that its going to die on me tomorrow. I know what you mean about the bonnets being hard to put on. I have ripped about 3 foam bonnets already trying to get them on .
Oh and i can find replacement bonnets at any of my local auto parts stores ( AutoZone, Pepboys, American Auto Parts ect.. ) over here in San Antonio. Im not sure about your area but im sure you can find them at a local auto parts store around you to.

Yea, I thought for the first time I would take it through a thorough test run and see what I could do with it. It stood up better then I thought after the beating it went though.

I have found them at PepBoys and sears. I can't seem to find them at the AutoZone(s) around my area. I live right on the edge of Austin and I have about 3 AutoZones, 1x O" reilly, 1x pepboys and 1x Sears in my area. You could possibly fine them in area, but I had a fun time finding them lol.

Great review. I had a 10" Orbital buffer from Sears which didn't seem to work properly but still want to try working with a basic machine, so I bought the one you reviewed a few months ago (I think I paid $12.99 at Walmart).

You are 100% correct in everything you wrote. I think your assessment is perfect.

What I did about the tight fitting bonnets is go up to 7 inch bonnets which seem to do the trick. They go on tight, fit snug yet are easy to put on. When I first bought it, I ripped the foam bonnet to shreds!!!

For me this was just an initial purchase to see if I liked working with a buffer (which I LOVE) and the next step will be to go out and get a DA polisher, but I'm hoping to coax the good folks at Megs to set up an NJ class first!!!

Nice review, thanks for taking the time and sharing.
I really don't know how the perform because I've never used one, remember that the first thing I tried was the G100 from the beginning

              Re: MVP 6" Polisher/Buffer (56k Review)

Thanks every one. I might move up to a 7" since it does to seem to eat the 6" bonnets. I have been looking for a DA in my area and can't seem to find one... Might just go and hit up ebay.com since I do know they carry them there.

I have found the orbiter polisher(s) in my local hardware stores but they all have one setting(s) and that is it. One funny thing is when I go and ask if they carry the D.A they kind of just look at me like "What is that?" so I have to sit there and explain to them what it is... it's quite funny.

But I am glad that every one likes the review. It's not a bad little machine. It just has it's pros and cons like everything else but once you actually get the bonnets to fit correctly it will be fine from there. It was basically made to help apply the wax and any polish but pretty hard in tight spots or if you have curves in the hood like I did.

If you're looking for something that is simple and helps in moving the polishers/Cleaners/Waxes around then this would be it, but, for big jobs... you would need something else.

If you kinda look at the pictures you will notice the hail damage to the car :P

I may have missed it, but is this a random orbital buffer?

ADS has the G110 and the new Porter Cable 7424XP that seems to be a pretty good machine, may not be as powerful as the G110.....

I've seen older PC's go for cheap on Ebay if that's what you are doing, just check often, not always there but they pop up time to time.

Autogeek has 7424XP packages that seem to be of good value.

I am thinking about trying my hands on $26 7" variable speed rotary from HF store. Actually, I already tried it. It is difficult than I had imagined. I did not burn 10 year old paint on either of my car :-) Unfortunately, M105 and the wool buffer still did not make the paint 90% defect free. But, I was trying it on the cars which I had applied M105 by hand in the past. So most of the easy correction was already done. The buffer came with 7" hook and loop non-flexible backing plate and foam pad to apply wax. It has also has wool (or wool looking type) bonnet and a terrycloth bonnet which you have to tie a knot. I suspect if I could put the SoftBuff pads and the matching backing plate, I might be quite happy with it. If not, I can pick up RB-DA adapter and then re-use the pads and BP on my subsequent real DA purchase.

hahah i have the exact same buffer. i baught it to polish headlights cause i didnt wanna sit there and use my hand all day. worked pretty good. then i use it to apply wax on my truck and it does pretty well at that too, i now have a g110 so it barely gets used, but it is still out on display in the garage with all the other tools!!! great job on the car. cant beat the buffer for the price! a time saver when your waxing any car or truck
