  • pad tearing

Hi, I have a 7424 model of Pc. I have worn out a w8006 pad after about 5 cars due to the pad tearing just past the white backing. It seems it cuts a little bit each time I use it. The backing plate is about the same size , tiny bit smaller than the white backing, so I assume the backing plate is cutting into the pad. It doesn't happen with my Lake country pads as the backing is much larger. I much prefer the meguiars pad but I need them to last longer. Is this a technique problem or should I get a different backing plate? Anyone else with this problem?

It might be caused by you pushing down too hard on the polisher or tilting the polisher at an angle.

      Re: pad tearing

      Hi mini44:

This is a problem some people have.

It is related to the size of the backing plate, actual diameter. Edge of the backing plate can not contact the foam part of the pad.

The only fix is to get a smaller diameter backing plate or order the Meguiar's plate. I believe that the Meguiar's web site has the actual plate diameter for the item shown with the product. So take a look there to determine the size plate you will need.

      Hope that helps.

The last car had lots and angles and curves , which did the pad in but I don't see how you can avoid it. Is the backing plate for the g100 about the same size as the pad backing?

            Hi mini44:

The actual diameter of the W-64DA backing plate is 4 7/8".

This is the backing plate for the 6 1/2" pad.

Did not see this on the Meguiar's web site, sorry for the bad info.

              Re: pad tearing

              KTruck,
Mine measures 4 15/16 . I also washed the pad , I guess that's a nono and if I didn't have it on exactly correct and pushed too hard . Its probably all of the above. I'll start with buying a meguiars backing plate and some new pads, then pay attention to my technique. Thanks for the info

                Re: pad tearing

Thanks KTruck that was it. I received my new plate from ADS today and it's 1/8 inch smaller all the way around. 1/4 inch across. I'm going to also try to refrain from washing them.
