  • Need Help Getting Started with PC DA

    Hello everyone,

I have done so much reading in these forums over the past year and this is my first time posting myself. I am hoping that I can receive the help that so many other have received on this sight already.
Getting to the point, I am extremely interested in the auto detailing industry and am definitely car crazy. I am always looking for ways to improve the appearance of my car and keep it clean. I received a Porter Cable 7424 Random Orbital polisher for Christmas. I have yet to use it because I want to make sure I get the right products first. So, what I am asking is what should I buy to get started with the PC. I have never used a buffer before and will be starting on a test panel. After reading I have concluded that I should probably get the W8006 pad and W9006 pad to start, but have no idea about waxes and polishes to start off with. Please let me know what you all think and I appreciate any help that you can throw my way.

autodetailingsolutions.com is probably the best place to shop for stuff.

Here is a link or two with the basic products...

Recommended Products - G100a Dual Action Polisher

Using the G-100 to remove swirls with the Professional Line

For one thing, it really comes down to how much you feel like spending to get stuff to play with.

ADS sells a 6-pack of pads that you can mix and match if you want, could get 3 8006 pads, 2 9006 pads, and a 7006 pad. Order some bonnets to go with the 7006 pad for removing waxes.

For products, #80 is pretty much the go to product for general cleaning/polishing. You dont mention your car, but if it needed a stronger cleaner, #83 would be a product to get as well.

You could pick any of the waxes, #21 happens to be my favorite.

Dont forget to clay, get a Grit Guard for your rinse water bucket, etc, etc...

    Hope that helps some...

Murr, I am now convinced that for new people, like I was, you simply have this saved and paste it in, lol.

Hey bud, welcome and congrats! You will not be dissappointed in the least. I have an 05 Black Matrix and it was nasty, full of cob webs, swirls, scratches, etc. One pass with M83 on an 8006 pad with the G100 (PC7424) and a world of difference! I plan on hitting it again in some spots with the 83 then over the whole car with 80 before applying the wax coat.

Take a look at my posts, I have plenty of pictures. And just to mention, this is the first machine I have ever used on a car, I used to do it all by hand! It's a very easy product to use and the results are fantastic, just follow that swirl removal how-to, to a T and you will be all set, don't be afraid to put pressure on the machine, as long as you keep it moving and don't hold it in one place you are fine!

Other than the links, typed fresh every time.

Everyone is always concerned at first, and that they might need something different, but as you have found, the process really does work, and it is just about the same for every situation. Sometimes a little fine tuning is needed, or sometimes something stronger is needed, but other than that it works the same.

Which makes sense working on clear coat as we are all working on clear coat paint then which is similar. But even single stage paints respond to the same treatment.

Thanks for all of the help so far. After all of my reading, I am not too worried about learning to use the DA polisher. I have a silver 2001 integra, and the paint is in pretty good shape, but I can see some fine scratches in the paint that I want to get rid of. From what some of you have told me, I think I am confident in what I need to buy to start off learning about buffing cars. Thanks a lot, and if anyone else has any info, please post.
