  • Pad for Porter Cable DA Polisher

    Hi Mike,

I just ordered a PC DA Polisher and it comes with a 6" polishing pad #54745. I want to polish my new, black Lexus GS300 with a Swirl Remover #9 as it came out of the dealer with minor swirl marks (probably due to incorrect washing and detailing) and wax it with Gold Class.

Will the #54745 polishing pad do the job paired with #9 or do I need to use 8006? I already ordered an 8006 and 9006 for the wax but I thought I'd use the #54745 first as it comes included with my PC order and use the 8006 at a later date. I'm assuming that because PC makes the Meguiars DA polisher that you'd be familiar with #54745 polishing pad.

    Please advise. Thanks.

I thought the pad that comes with the PC is an 8006 pad. Someone correct me if I'm wrong. It's been a long time since I got my PC.

The #54745 is the screw-mount factory pad from Porter-Cable. Just about everybody who's ever posted about trying to use one agrees it should not be used on any paint you care about.

Practically all of the good pads from almost any supplier (Meguiar's included) are hook and loop (Velcro) backed. You'll need a hook faced backing plate to use them.

When you buy a G100, Meguiar's version of the PC, it comes with a Meguiar's backing plate and a W8006 pad.

Paul summarized the answers pretty well,

General forum consensus across every forum we've ever perused is that the white polishing pad that comes the PC you purchased is pretty much only good for removing wax by placing a clean, dry bonnet over the outside of it.

        Hope this helps...

Thanks for the reply. If I use the dry bonnet to remove wax, would I be creating swirl marks or do you suggest removing wax by hand? I just don't want to spend hours polishing and waxing and reintroducing swirls by using a bonnet.

Here's three years and 6 pages of threads from Saturday classes with just about every car club under the sun and no swirls induced from removing wax using a bonnet over a dry foam pad.

I've been using the Bonnet to remove wax for a while now and it works great. I've never noticed any scratches or swirls . I never thought to use the white pad that came with my PC. I took Mike's advice and bought a W7006 just for wax removal.

Same here no problems with the bonnets... They work very well, I hope Meguiars brings something similar back to the market.

I have tried all three Meguiars pads 9006, 8006 and 7006 (not the Porter Cable one) as 'backer pads' and hands down the 7006 is the way to go the dense foam is needed for the bonnet.
