  • Cookie-cutter effect on W8006 pad

    Hi

Can someone please tell what the diameter is of the velcro backing on the 8" W8000 pad, please? This is the 8" version of the W8006 (6.5") pad that I currently have.

The reason for asking is that my Makita's plate is slightly larger than the W8006 pad's velcro backing, and as such is destroying the pad by cutting into the foam around it.

The only other alternative would be to find another brand of pad that has its vecro backing all the way almost to the edge of the pad.

    Thanks

I'm afraid I've investigated getting the Meguiars backing plate (DA64), but the Meguiar's contact here in South Africa says that the thread doesn't match the Makita BO6040 DA polisher that I have.

        Any ideas?

Are you using a Rotary buffer or an orbital buffer from Makita?

The BO6040 is a Dual Action Random Orbit Polisher/Sander.

It appears that if you don't have a 5/16" diameter shaft that you're out of luck. You can however, buy pads from other brands that will work fairly well.

Sometimes it's these little details like that fact that you're using a Makita BO6040 and not a normal rotary buffer with a normal backing plate that if included in your first message would help everyone to understand better what problems you're trying to overcome.

The problem you're experienceing is one of the problems with the Makita BO6040, it doesn't have a huge following and therefore at this time there are not a lot of options available for it as far as backing plates and foam pads go.

As can be seen from my posts in this thread, I simply wanted to know the diameter of the velcro backing on the Meguiar's 8" pad. I didn't include the make of DA polisher I have, as I wasn't interested into getting into a debate about the deficiencies of the Makita BO6040 of which I am well aware.

I would use another brand of pad if I have to, but I thought I'd investigate the 8" pad solution first as I am a Meguiar's user through and through.

Unfortunately, the Porter-Cable is the only electric DA buffer I know of that uses industry standard interchangeable plates. AFAIK none of the 230V machines available do.

The 8" pads are meant to be used with 6" (150mm) backing plates. I believe the BO6040 uses a 150mm plate. But using a larger pad spreads the machine's energy over a larger area, which reduces the ability to remove defects. Maybe using the BO6040's forced-orbit mode could compensate but you'd have to develop a technique.

Perhaps you could make a ring of thick felt or something to put on the outer edge of the 150mm plate that would keep it from digging in?

The tool's not a bad took it's just different and takes some getting used because of the way it operates. The Velcro on the back of the W-8000 polishing pad here on my desk measures 7 1/4" in diameter.

Here are some of the accurate measurements I'm working with....

                        Makita BO6040 Backing Plate Diameter = 145mm (5.7")

                        Diameter of full W8006 pad = 165mm (6.5")
                        Velcro backing diameter of W8006 pad = 135mm (5.3")

                        Diameter of full W8000 pad = 203mm (8")
Velcro backing diameter of W8000 pad = ???mm (?.?")

I do understand that using a larger pad might require more work, but I'd rather do that than having the possibility of causing damage to the vehicle I'm detailing when the machine destroys the pad. I am contemplating getting the rotary Makita soon to compliment my arsenal of detailing tools and products for those more aggressive tasks.

There also another alternative (or extension) to the felt option that I'm looking into and I'll let you know as soon as I've got it to work.

                        Thanks
                        Keith

Whoops! make that 6 1/4" diameter.

(I measured starting at the 1" mark on my tape measure versus the end of the tape measure).
