  • Need a backing plate for my Makita BO 6040

    Hi,

I know this is the G-100 forum but maybe someone can help me with my makita. i am looking for a 125mm backing plate and dont know what will fit.
will a g-100 backing plate fit or how are they mounted?

here are 2 pictures of the makita mounting:

I think you’d need to check with Makita to see if a 125mm plate is available. I’ve never seen or heard of one.

The Backing plate mounting system that Porter-Cable uses is actually a common standard used on pneumatic sanders and polishers here in the US. Many companies make them and they’re widely available.

I don’t know if any of the polishers available in Europe can use the same backing plates as any others.

I would probably try to figure out a way to either modify a Makita plate or make some kind of interface to sandwich in between the plate and pads.

makita dont have any other backing plates. a guy at makita told me the plates from old festool machines should maybe work, i couldnt find any with the same mounting system though

modifying sounds good. maybe i can just cut it to the correct size?

A W64DA should would if the Makita has a female end and a 5/16" shaft.

          Hi,

Looks like Festool has the same way of mounting the backing plate
on the machine, so you can see on this picture I made:

I know they are also available as a 125 mm. backing plate.

          Hope this helps
          I just love detailing

            ah cool

            thx

looks exactly the same, will try to find one of those. for what machine is yours? when i look for the new rotex machines, they have a different mounting system.

              @piebald

I have the Rotex Ro 150 E (old version without Fastfix). The mounting system for the backing plate looks like the same as from the Makita BO 6040.

But you have to examine carefully the measures, which are 19mm x 17mm x 4mm with a drilling diameter of 8,1mm for the 8mm socket screw by the rotex.

But I think it's generally not a good idea to use a smaller backing plate on the Makita BO 6040 because the diameter of the machine head is to large for a 125mm backing plate and maybe you could loose your garantie. But first of all you increases the risk to damage the paint by contact with the machine head.

Professionals indeed use backing plates with smaller diameters than the buffing pads, but for the BO 6040 it's better to use the original 150mm backing plate and buffing pads with larger diameters than 150mm. A good choice would be the Meguiars buffing pads like the W-8006 and W-9006 with the diameter of 6.5 inches which is approximately 165mm.

              Hope this helps

              Harald
