  • what now?? is this micro marring?

okay last week i used my pc for the first time, i dont have megs polishing pads at this minute, but i have another popular brand as they easier to get here in uk

i used #80 and the hardest of my polishing pads(orange) then i made a pass with the medium pad(green) and applied nxt

in strong sun i can see a slight effect in the paint by the work that i did ...im not sure weather to call it haze or micro marring?

my question is how i do figure how to solve this im guessing i should either work #80 for longer on a softer pad..or use a milder product on the same pad

not sure the pics help much...you can see a little bit around where the suns reflection is on first pic....btw the paint seems rather soft and easy to mark even with a megs MF and speed detailer

That first picture looks like micro-marring to me.

Try using the M80 Speed Glaze with a softer pad and re-polish each panel but first see if you can use the M80 and this softer pad to make the paint look good in one small area.

I think the orange one you're referring to is a cutting pad made by Lake Country?

Meguiar's doesn't recommend using cutting pads with the dual action polisher just for this reason. In fact, at the classes we teach on Saturdays, I often joke that one of the reasons we don't recommend using our cutting pad with the dual action polisher is because if the person hazes or micro-mars their finish the first thing they do is go to the forum and ask for help.

So we try to nip this in the bud right off the bat. Now when someone uses some other company's cutting pad and compounds or abrasive polishes, we have no control over the results you get, but we'll do our best to help you fix the problem.

Well, it could be, but it is hard to say. As it was your first time with the PC, you might have been correcting some swirling/cobwebs? Those marks could be leftovers, and just need another pass. Or perhaps from not working the #80 long enough.

Certainly not bad for the first try.

If you think your paint is extremely soft, you can also go to a milder cleaner, like #82, or try #80 with a softer pad.

I assume you applied Nxt with the soft pad?

It's kind of hard to tell from this photo, but what I'm seeing are uniform, tiny haze or micro-marring scratches.

Maybe Steve has a larger size of the same above photo he can crop out just the affected area so we can get a better look?

Murr1525 is right on the money as for trying a softer pad and a more gentle product if the paint is in fact very soft, perhaps re-polish the area with the M80 Speed Glaze and a soft polishing pad and then hit it with either M82 or M09 with an even softer pad than you used with the M80, for example our W-9006 Finishing Pad with either M82 or M09 works really well for removing the lightest little hazy scratches out of soft soft paints.

okay the pads i have are sonus DAS orange (firm cutting) green (meduim) and blue (soft for waxing)

to be fair i had to make 3-4 passes in places with #80 and the orange pad to deal with my swirls etc...i guess it need a decent go with the green pad also

the original pic i took is high res, photobucket resized it, and i have no idea how to crop it and where i could host a bigger res pic...i'll see if i can find out how to post a croped section

oh BTW i wasnt suggesting there was a problem with megs products its a minor issue , that im sure i can cope with after a little more practice

The people at Sonus recommend using cutting pads with the dual action polishers, but Meguiar's does not recommend this nor do we sell our customers cutting pads for this purpose for the problems you're encountering and the reasons I stated above.

We would recommend a more aggressive chemical with a less aggressive pad and then follow this step with an even less aggressive product and possibly a less aggressive pad to get the results you're looking for. The idea being the philosophy Meguiar's has been teaching for over 100 years,

"Always use the least aggressive product to get the job done"

If you still have the original, then crop out the section and upload it you your gallery here.

what speed did you make your final pass with the green pad?

Sometimes you just have to lower the speed a little.

I haven't used Sonus Pads, but I think they have a warning about lowering the speed to 3.5 if the pad seems too aggresive.

maybe you could use something with just a little abrasiveness like #3 machine glaze

i made the final pass with the pc set at 4.5 (ish) as it seemed about right (still learning)

to be honest i just made one quick pass on the green pad, at the time with the overcast conditions it looked perfect now when i view it in the strong afternoon sun i can see that it needs a little more work

mike , your right i think i did need something a little stronger to begin with, but hey the #80 gave me more time to practice
