  • Backing Plate Size

Hi all. I have some questions about backing plates as well as being curious as to the size of the backing plate that everyone uses.
    I'm using a 5" polyurethane BP.

    1) What size is the Meguiar's BP?

    2) The Meguiar's BP looks like it is rigid/stiff - is that true?

    3) If it is rigid [ not like Home Depot Rigid ], is there a benefit of using a stiffer BP than the poly one I have?

    4) Would there be a benefit to using a 6" BP as opposed to a 5"?

Probably too many questions for such a little thing, but thanks in advance for any suggestions/information .

This is the one I got from Lowes and it's like the one Meguiar's sell's. The only thing is you have to get a velcro backing plate for it. It doesn't come with one. Only come's with a plate with a pad attached to it.

I have the Meguiars backing plate and it measures 5".

The red portion of the backing plate is rigid but then there is a thin layer of a flexible/dense foam type material(the whiteish color) with the velcro attached to it.

        Not sure on this one.

Seems to me someone posted that the larger plate would dig into the foam of the pads creating tears/damaging the foam. With a slightly smaller plate, the backing plate never comes in contact with the foam its self, only the velcor backing thus preventing any damage.

        Hope that helps!

I got the same one from Lowe's 3 months ago.. Throw that white pad away, and buy the Meg's backing plate W65DA (5").

Then buy the W8006 (Yellow), and the W9006 (Tan) 6" pads.

You can also buy the W7006 (Maroon) pad for removing waxes. You don't remove them with the W7006 pad, but place a GC MF bonnet over the pad and remove your wax.

I don't use the pad that came with the polisher. I got a backing plate through a detail shop.
