  • Weird discoloration on leather

Hey guys, before I do anything stupid I wanted to get opinions on how to restore two problem areas I have on my black leather seats. One is a classic scratch the other is a bit, different. Someone, who will remain unnamed, let some salad dressing leak onto the seat and sat there for a few hot days and it caused discoloration. At least that is the story told to me. Any ideas you have for how to restore the leather would be greatly appreciated. Running my hand across the affected area I don't feel any difference but their is a obvious visual difference.

I tried Meguiar's leather cleaner, no luck.

Salad dressings usually have oil and/or an acid (vinegar) in them. If it discolored darker it's probably an oil based stain; maybe it didn't eat through the protective coating. I'm thinking like the skin oils that accumulate on steering wheels. I just cleaned mine with Leather Masters strong foam cleaner & it worked well. Ultima also makes an interior cleaner that's gotten good reviews. Guess you can also take it to an upholstery shop to see if they can help.

Sorry that image didn't come through, here it is. It's a lighter stain:

Looks to me like the protective coating has been partly eaten away. Maybe try something to cover the damage so it's not so noticeable, like just a conditioner/protectant without the cleaners? Guess you can contact the leather masters company for their opinion if someone here doesn't have a solution; they've helped me solve a couple of problems, & even though they're selling their products it was worthwhile.

          Hey dsiglin to MOL

I know you said you haven't did anything yet, that's good but what products do you have (IE: APC / Leather Cleaner)

Also do you have a steamer, different brushes, micro fiber towel and/or a Porter Cable with a carpet/leather seat brush?

Just trying to get an ideal of what you have so we can help you go after the stains without having you go buy something special that you may just use once.

Do you have the all in one product? Meaning the cleaner and conditioner in one bottle.

Instead of writing back in forth just thought I would give you a link to one of top interior cleaner's and is very good at teaching us the correct way and always gives more then one option just incase you/we don't have all the big dollar equipment.

He has 3 more Interior leather seat video's, find them and watch them all, Will make understand what and what not to do and understand how to go about cleaning leather seats safe and proper. Hope this helps!
