  • Trashed a leather seat today, never happened before

Hey all, I have always used this process. Spray on leather cleaner, hit it with my vapor steamer, work it around and the dirt just melts away. Wipe with clean towel, apply leather lotion.

Well today, this is what happened. The seats color dye just completely started to wash away. I billed out $150 for the truck, and hopefully I can have this fixed for $100. Lesson learned.. Has this happened to anyone else?

*Edited for language* I uploaded the pic into the MOL gallery, now it wont let me put it into the thread.. If you go to the gallery, you will see the seat.. cant miss it.. CAN SOMEONE HELP ME WITH POSTING PICS?

Looks like the heat of the steamer took off the coating of the leather.

If thats what happened then you cannot do much as material is missing.

I am not a leather care expert so I do not know this for sure but that would be my best guess.

Is this a Toyota or Ford by any chance?

Gmc Yukon. I posted the pic in the gallery but I can't get it to upload to the thread. I have never had this issue before but it f'd it up big time today. I basically worked for free today. Took a good pic to keep in my memory bank so this does not happen again. Think I will be switching to a stiff brush for leather work.

Re: Trashed a leather seat today, never happened before

Always apply product to an applicator not the finished leather surface. If you spray a cleaning product directly to the surface
it will 'spot or streak' clean.

What cleaning product / dilution did you use?

Note: heat generated by a steamer will increase the strength of a cleaning product

If you don't mind - What product, what steamer, and what steam setting (high / med / low)?

Very sorry to see what happened and to hear you worked a day for free.

Are you sure that was leather? reach under the seat and see if you can feel backing, real leather has no backing, it's a hyde. I have seen expensive cars say leather and it's Pleather. i.e. painted chemicals on cloth.

I wonder if that seat had been re-dyed and not recoated. Do you know the history of that truck?

Looks like the leather seats were repainted or something in those lines. The steam must have taken out the dye. Maybe thats all you need to do is get them repainted and it should go back you might even be able to do it your self call a local upholster see what they tell you send them some pics get different opinions from them
