  • Leather Care Questions

I don't know what leather care products to choose.

Gold Class Leather & Vinyl Cleaner & Gold Class Leather Conditioner
    or
Gold Class Rich Leather Aloe Cleaner & Gold Class Rich Leather Aloe Conditiner
    or
Gold Class Leather Cleaner and Conditioner

My care is 7 years old, and the leather is dirty, no rips or tears.

Any help in choosing would be appreciated...Thanks.

    Re: Leather Care Questions

If your seats are very dirty, you are probably going to want to scrub them with leather cleaner and then move onto applying conditioner. A 2 in 1 produvct like the combined cleaner/conditioner will not work as well as a 2 step process.

Or going the route of something like APC followed with the Cleaner/Conditioner.

If you wanted to stay with leather only products, but needed a deeper cleaning, you could buy the Leather and Vinyl Cleaner (which Mike Stoops really liked) and then go with the regular Cleaner/Conditioner to follow up, and use in the future.

Thanks for the advice. Do you think the vinyl/leather is a better cleaner than the leather cleaner?

          Re: Leather Care Questions

I have not used the new spray bottle one, but Mike is usually right when he says stuff is good.

These are the new ones, just to be sure:

and then the new cleaner/conditioner is in a similar bottle (not really new, just re-packaged).

OK, in all seriousness...... you're looking for products to work on what you describe as dirty 7 year old leather. You definitely want to go with our new Gold Class Leather & Vinyl Cleaner and Gold Class Leather Conditioner - the new pair that Murr linked to.

Having done demos with these for several large retail auto parts chains as well as Meguiar's Canada, demos that included side by side comparisons of several top very well known competitors, even I was blown away. Interior care products don't normally excite me too terribly much, but this cleaner especially is just fantastic. The only down side to it was after doing a demo on a 9 year old Mercedes E-Class wagon with light gray leather, it cleaned up the demo spot so well that we ended up having to clean the entire interior to make it match! All of the competing products we tried did nothing on this well used kid hauler.

Application was via a fresh, clean terry cloth towel and only moderate pressure while applying to small areas (about 1' x 2') at a time.

We even used the new Leather Conditioner on the Bugatti Super Sport we detailed here a couple of weeks ago (cleaning wasn't really needed), and it was outstanding - easy to apply and remove, nice matte finish and zero residue.

                  Mike,

My methods of cleaning leather must stink. I tried the Gold Class Leather Cleaner and Conditioner and it is one of the few Meguiar's products that disappointed me. Are there any instructional videos on using it?

I've used about everything in the book (from Meg's to Lexol to now using Leather Masters) and although I think Leather Masters has worked the best for me, I'm not really blown away by the "cleaning" ability of any of these products.

Lexol in particular left a very "chalky" residue behind which I though was awful.

Nothing you're doing wrong, trust us. Gold Class Leather Cleaner & Conditioner has very mild cleaning ability and is really more of a maintenance product. In our post above we're referring to the new for 2011 Gold Class Leather & Vinyl Cleaner and separate Gold Class Leather Conditioner. There is no comparison between the cleaning ability of this new cleaner and anything else we've ever offered for that specific purpose, including the Aloe Leather Cleaner. And every single competing product we've tested it and demonstrated it against fell far short, too. We've done these demos for several large auto parts retailers and they were all very impressed. There really is no trick with this product - spray it onto a clean terry towel and rub the towel on the leather.

The picture below is a bit embarrassing actually since it's the driver's seat in my daily driver. I didn't realize the leather was so dirty until I did a little demo using the new Gold Class Leather & Vinyl Cleaner on the right side and a popular European brand on the left side. The left side showed no change at all with the European brand, but the right side quickly became brighter and cleaner - much to my dismay (I really thought these seats were pretty clean!!)

                      Mike,

                      Awesome!!! Thanks for the reply.

I got so frustrated with the condition of the leather in my wife's CR-V I took a magic eraser to it and I think I've ruined the leather (or at least stripped the shine off of it).

I'll bet some of the new stuff and try it out. Maybe I'll do a side by side with Leather Masters and post the results. Thanks.
