  • tear in vinyl

I have a small tear/cut in one of my door panels. It's vinyl like the dashboard. I googled vinyl repair and found this on ehow.com. Has anyone tried this or know of something else that would work?

    Instructions

    Difficulty: Moderate

    Things You’ll Need:
    • Utility knife
    • Painters' tape
    • Silicone caulking
    • Vinyl paint

    Step1
Use a utility knife to "V" cut the crack slightly. Be careful not to cut too much, shave away just enough to form a "V" shape, to allow easy application of the silicone caulking.
    Step2
Clean well both inside and outside of the crack, removing all dust and loose particles. Allow the area to dry well before proceeding.
    Step3
Mask either side of the crack with painters tape to keep the caulking in the opening and not on the good vinyl dashboard. Silicone caulking dries clear, but shiny.
    Step4
Apply the silicone caulking into the crack and allow it to dry for 10 to 15 minutes, before removing the tape. If the crack is small, simply remove the tape and allow the silicone to dry. If the crack is larger, you can choose to texture the silicone using the texturizing portion of a vinyl repair kit. It is best to texture before removing the tape, however you must texture within 10 to 15 minutes, before the silicone dries too much to take the texture.
    Step5
Paint larger cracks in your dashboard with motor car vinyl paint to reduce visibility. Allow the silicone to dry at least two hours before painting.

    Re: tear in vinyl

    Haven't tried this myself.

If this is important to you, then there are business that specialize in vinyl repair, might want to see if you can find someone locally that does this and see what they can do for you.

If it's not that important then maybe find a vinyl repair kit from a reputable company and give it a try yourself.

Document your results and share them on the forum.

Well, I just ordered this kit from Eastwood. Once I get it I'll take pics and do a small write up if it works. Hopefully it will!

Cool! I just noticed a very small tear on the vinyl area of my driver side seat. I know eventually it will get worse. Let us know how this works for you. Thanks!
