  • Scratches on my Head Unit

Tonight I was cleaning the inside of my car and I noticed a small scratch on the face of my head unit. This scratch is on the clear plastic of the display. Do you know of anything that will remove it?

    Thanks in advance...

    hi there Habhide,

Maybe you would try one of these:

or the Plastx from the consumer line:

you said it was a small scratch.. but how deep is this small scratch? and maybe if you have a good high resolution picture from it..

      Hi Habhide,

When you say head unit do you mean your CD/Radio set?

Either way, the PlastX contains a microscopic diminishing abrasive in it that will remove fine scratches in most plastics. You want to be careful when working on some plastics because they may be coated. Also, Lexan, is a very had plastic compared to plexiglas which is generally very soft.

Meguiar's always says to test your product of choice in an inconspicuous area and check your results before continuing, but with small areas this can be hard to do.

Two other plastic products Meguiar's makes are the #17 Plastic cleaner and the #10 Plastic polish. The #17 can be used to remove very fine scratches, it does not contain the microscopic diminishing abrasives that the PlastX contains and is very mild.

#10 Plastic Polish is a pure polish and contains no ingredients with the intended purpose to clean or remove defects. This is a last step product for plastics after the cleaning work has been performed. It restores optimum clarity and leaves behind an anti-static surface.

Following Meguiar's philosophy of "Always use the least aggressive product to get the job done", you would start with #17 first, and if this wasn't aggressive enough, then you would substitute PlastX. After the defects are removed, you would apply a thin coat of #10 Plastic Polish, remove with a soft microfiber and you're done.

Similarly, I've had some very slight scratches (I stress slight) on the face of my head unit as well. Utilizing Plastx, I was able to remove them and make it look good as new.

Plastx is a newer product from Meguiar's and offers a diminishing abrasive system very similar to many of their polishes that you'd utilize on paint. It works GREAT!
