  • A LGM OR a Shop VAC?

I've been reading ALOT of posts about using one or both of these tools for cleaning carpets and upholstery.
And I see MANY have both of these, BUT - having a limited budget I may be able to purchase one or the other but not both. I need to choose between the LGM w/o the water heater, OR, A 5 Gallon, 5.5 HP Shop Vac.
Those who are familar with both - PLEASE advise.

    Thanks, Michael

I'm going to say get the vac. You can't really **** up loose dirt with a LGM. Plus you can always use the wet/dry vac to extract with.

you ask a question that only you can answer as you get answers from us.

      What is your goal?

How much are you cleaning upholster/carpets/seats etc?
Are you just cleaning spots or whole seats/carpets etc?

What do you use for a vacuum right now?

Are you going to use it for professional service?

I own a Craftsman shop vac (6gal)and love it for vacuuming the interior of our car. I also own an upright carpet spot cleaner with upholstery attachment. I have used it twice since entering the deep dark world of detailing, wait make that 3. First time I sucked out spilled hot chocolate, spot cleaned upholstery on first pro job I did on an Excursion and sucked out spilled coffee out of our Neon. I've owned it for several years and spot clean our house carpet every summer when it's hot.

You could use the shop vac for extracting the soap from upholster/carpet, my spot cleaner is not a hot water (except water you put in tank) and it takes a bit to dry. I only use it cause it has a soap spraying nozzle and little brush and scrub and extract with combination of Quik Out.

      Yikes I'm jabbering.

If I only had money for one or the other and only for personal use...., I would get the shop vac. Shop vacs are great around the house too, Ever had a washer plug and flood? works great to get rid of all that water. I also use it as a blower and blow the porch off of twigs and leaves which is easier than sweeping as our porch is cement with peagravel and hard to sweep and sit on

Hope that helps. Save your dough and get a LGM later I plan on buying one......someday.

Re: A LGM OR a Shop VAC?

TKS fellas....you are confirming the way I was already leaning, toward a Shop Vac. I am NOT going into a detailing business.....will just be using around the house and in my '84 Elky. Right now, for years, I have used a pretty powerful little portable Sears Vac to vacuum out my car when I did it....BUT thinking more about using one to suction out hot soap and water after I vacuum then shampoo [hand scrub] the carpet in my car.

The shop vac would definitely be more MULTI- Purpose....probably the way I need to go at this time.
PLUS the one I am looking at is more powerful than the little one I presently use.....so could replace the little guy at same time.

I'd go to Home Depot and pick up a Ridgid Vac. The filters are cheaper than other brands.
If its fast, loud, and runs on a flammable liquid...count me in.

x2 for the rigid. Just like them better then the shop-vac.
