  • New Leather and carpet, things to look out for?

    Hello everybody,

Now that my vette is back from the painter I'm looking more into the interior. I'm still bussy with the paint and rebuilding the car but it never hurts to look forward in time. In the fall the vette will be going to the interiorbuilder and it will get a new custom carpet and everything will be wrapped in leather. Of course it all is nice when it's new but it still has to be nice after 10 years.
My interiorbuilder is a guy that took over the company from his dad which his grandfather started so he has the knowledge and feeling for it. But I like to look around and here some different ideas/opinions from everybody.

To begin with the carpet, because I changed and raised the center console the standard carpet will not fit anymore. A costum carpet will fit perfect but takes a lot of time to make and money (around 1300 euro's of work, excl. the carpet itself). Then I have two options, to go with standard carpet which will be an extra 200 euro's (1200 total) on material or go with wool carpet which will be an extra 500 euro's (1700 total). So for only an extra 300 euro's I'll get a full wool carpet. A wool carpet is 100% black and very soft but I don't know the downside. Does anybody here know the downside of wool carpet? Normally you'll only find it in the top cars like Bentley, RR and Aston Martin etc. Will this carpet fade color or become fluffy?

In the picture from left to right: left is the original carpet that came out of the car, in the middel aftermarket carpet, to the right is the wool carpet.

Then the leather. Because I live in Holland we have easy acces to leather from England, Germany, Italy or the Norway and Finland. Good quality for a "nice" price. The color will be a magnolia / vanilla color so very light. I hear from a lot of people that normal trousers (wrangler or levi) will wear out the leather and impossible to clean. Is this true?

In the picture you see four leather samples. The pictures are from a Callaway Speedster with the interior color I really like. If taken this picture to see which color will be closest to the picture.

    The numbers:
    1. UK Hide Co. Connolly Autolux serie. Number 4493 (no print in leather)
    2. UK Hide Co. Nappa serie. Helios (no print in leather)
    3. Forgot the company.. Magnolia Number 33530 (light print in leather)
    4. UK Hide Co. Connolly Autocalf serie. Number 7601. (light print in leather)

I've seen some expensive car's been cleaned here so I hope some regular car cleaners can shim in to chear there knowledge about these materials

This is a picture with the color combination photoshoped into the vette.

    Thanks,

    Groeten Peter

According to the time stamp on your first post, Feb 23rd, 2008, 04:43 AM

We were probably driving towards work for our "Open Class" that Saturday morning and once we arrived it's pretty much a full day of being busy.

      Open Class on February 23rd

We can guarantee you that we didn't purposefully neglect your post and we appreciate your asking us for your recommendations, but often times if a post is made from late Friday night through Sunday night on this forum we may not catch it right away as we're either teaching a class or spending the following day, Sunday, (a day off), with our family.

As far as taking care of your new leather and your new carpet, for the leather any of our leather care products will be safe, (of course), here's two you might look at for maintain and protecting the leather surfaces.

Gold Class™ Rich Leather Aloe Conditioner

      Gold Class™ Rich Leather Spray

Gold Class™ Leather Cleaner & Conditioner

As for the carpet, we don't really make a carpet protectant like a Scotch Guard type product but that's the direction you might want to research into, basically it will coat the fibers and help prevent stains from penetrating into the fibers if you spill something on the carpet.

        Thanks for your reply Mike,

Good thing to hear you don't work 24/7
I was hoping somebody would shim in who has seen some older wool carpets and knows the common wear and tear they have (same for the leather) but apparently with no further replies it really is good stuff.
Thanks for the products. I think if I keep my feet and shoes clean the carpet will be in a prefect condition to.

My only experience with wool carpeting is with Oriental type rugs. They do not lend themselves to the same cleaning techniques used with symthetic fibers. They are soft and wear like iron but depending on the weave, they also hold on to dirt deep within the nap. I've had mine cleaned by professionals that do nothing else. They force a light (very light) and mild water based detergent from the back to the front and then the other way around. Rince and then run it through a large squeege type device and then air dried in an elevated position.

For a car, especially one that was going to be driven regularly, I'd go with synthetic fibers 100% (unless my butler was good at cleaning) just for ease of maintenance.....but that's just me.

I've had excellent results with regular use of Meguiars leather cleaning and conditioning products on my factory interior. If I was having custom leather installed, I think I'd ask the provider what their recommended maintenance tips might be......they might be somewhat different in their tanning and dyeing process that factory installed stuff from old Bossy The Cow. I know saddle makers and gun leather makers are pretty aware with what works best with the products they use.

Sounds like a cool project you've got going.
