help!!!leather overtreated!

Removing those cloth spots ( I used Connolly Hide Food leather cleaner mixed with water 1:12) I actually "removed" some of leather coating which resulted a dark spot. On other part of seat I used Mothers leather cleaner which safely removed cloth spot without any harsh to leather. I used brush for cleaning. Does anybody know how and where can I get it recoated, because it really bothers me. www.leathermagic.com what bout their leather coatings/treatments. I couldn't even imagine that factory recommended by Rolls Royce and Jaguar leather cleaner can actually remove leather coating. Please HELP!!!!!!!!!!Mike!!!!!!!!!!!

I'm very sorry to hear about your situation. Unfortunately, at this point, it sounds like your only alternative may be to consult with an automotive upholstry shop to have the seat panel that is damaged replaced.

Automotive leather coatings are very thin. They simply can't put them on too thick or you loose the feel of the leather (the suppleness as well as the pliability). It sounds as though you've worn through the protective clear coating that is on the surface of the leather and actually in to the hide itself. The simple act of abrasion with a cloth or other mechanical method must have been enough to wear through the coating.

Good luck with your situation and please keep us informed as to what conclusions that you come to...

I will check with leathermagic if it's possible ro restore that finish, which basicly darkens when it's wet (just that spot), and look's "OK" when it's dry. I still want to see if it is possible to recoat it and if recoating will be permanent. replacing seat panel, well that will probably be the last thing I will do if recoating won't work. I will keep you updated. So far I learned one thing - NEVER USE CONNOLLY HIDE FOOD on any leather! NEVER!It's better not to treat leather at all, rather then using that brand. Conditioner smells awful - pure kerosine, and has harsh chemicals which actually can dry leather out. That's 19th century leather treatment, and we live in 21st!

This must have been the product that you were utilizing at the time when the failure occured correct?

I ask only because I've used Connolly and I think it's a tremendous product. It's not my favorite but, definately in my top 3 for my uncoated King Ranch Castano leather.

Maybe it's good enough for uncoated leather - but not for coated. I've tried very many different leather cleaners - and top of the line for me is Mothers. It's strongest, and safe at the same time. As far as conditioners - Pinnacle or Wolfgang would be on a first place. If you haven't tried them - try 'em, you'll like 'em. Natural leather smell
Maybe because it's my first experience with Connolly, of maybe I rubbed too hard with a brush, but area that I cleaned with Mothers was cleaned fine, but area I cleaned with Connolly - was overtreated.

~One man’s opinion / observations ~

I’m sorry to hear of your bad experience with Connolly Hide Food, this product has been utilized (and still is) since RR inception and it is especially made for un-coated hides (not spray-on dye or coated leathers)

There is a vast difference between European leather used in RR and (original) Jaguars, these leathers are first quality (literally the top of the hide) US and Japanese use 2nd or 3rd layer s from the hide and then either spray on a dye and/or coat them with polyurethane.

Coated Leather:
Leather should be routinely cleaned using a pH-balanced, non-alkaline cleaner (6:1 Distilled water / Woolite solution) to loosen and lift grease and grime without drying the leather or affecting the hide’s natural pH. In addition to regular cleaning, leather requires replacement of natural oils.

Do not use silicone or Lanolin-based products as they have trouble reaching the leathers deep fibres, also avoid using leather-conditioning creams on coated leather as they cannot penetrate the coatings and the residue will remain leaving the leather with a greasy surface. Use a product that contains natural penetrating oils that will nourish the fibres underneath the coating and restore the leathers natural suppleness.

Best applied to a warm surface to help the oils penetrate the coating (warm with the suns heat or a hairdryer) allow sufficient time (preferably overnight) for the oils to permeate the coating and the leather underneath.

Recommended products-
a) Vinyl coated leather- use Groit’s Leather Rejuvenator or Leatherique Prestine Clean
b) Urethane Coated Leather- use Groit’s Leather Care or 1z einszett® Leather Care "Lederpflege"

TOGWT brings an excellent point. Connolly was designed for untreated hides (the pure leather minus coatings or dyes). My vehicle has no coating (however it is dyed to a certain degree) and thus, I suppose that is the reason that I had good luck with the product.

Another product that I've found that I like alot is Meguiar's Aloe Conditioner and Aloe Cleaner (2-step process). I know this is, somewhat, after the fact but, they are certainly great products for use on coated and uncoated leathers. In fact, I just used the aloe cleaner/conditioner over the weekend on my big fluffy recliner. It really did a fantastic job.

I though that 1z einszett® Leather Care "Lederpflege" uses wax, which will probably not let leather to breath.
So far I do know that TL's leather is far away from being high quality, and JAG's do use one of the highest leather. What about German cars?
