If doing a interior clean do most clean the headliner? i really suppose you should.But i was wondering if anybody had problems about "falling" the fabric coming down.i remember yrs ago this happened maybe a little to wet.I'm a little scared to try it if some one wants their interior done on todays cars,anybody have that happen? any input would be great thanks mavrick

Headliners still tend to be backed with cardboard of some sort. So as you can imagine, getting it too wet will cause problems.

It is generally best to spray any cleaner that is needed onto a cloth, then blot the headliner.

I don't think it is something that is always done, but gently blotting with a minimum of cleaner is the safest way to do it.

Hey,

You must be very careful when cleaning head liners. If you wet and area too much, the cardboard material will become saturated. Moreover, the headliner will tend to create a water mark stain that will wick outwards the wetter the material gets.

I tend to use a dry foam cleaner from Pro Wax. You apply very little to a cloth and gently wipe the surface. You can also use VERY sparingly, Meguiar's G9416 Heavy Duty Carpet and Interior Cleaner or APC diluted at ~7:1 works very well. Again, do not over saturate the material or you will be in a world of hurt.

That's what i thought,but was'nt sure, do you just do it lightly,like you said and leave it at that.?You know then the more you wipe it the wetter it might get,also worried about streaking like smokers cars get you know what i mean.seems a very "touching" thing to do,have you had any problems with that?,THANKS AGAIN mavrick

We do clean headliners but only as needed! As for APC, from our outlook, we perfer a 15:1 for headliners to start and increase if need be. For nearly a decade we have suucessfully used mild steam for tough jobs and thus far not one single headliner damaged!

As noted, start out with a mild APC mixture and get more aggressive if needed. As someone already mentioned, always spray the product onto a clean, white(colors could bleed) non bleeched towel and never directly onto the headliner surface.

Hey Mavrick,

To be quite honest, unless the headliner truly "needs" to be cleaned, I would avoid it. While others here seem to have had success with various methods, over the last 25 years, I have seen more problems because of over saturation, including horrific water stains caused by over zealous cleaning techniques. The dry foam I suggested is actually desiged for cleaning headliners. It does work. The problem is that if you do one spot, it will be readily clean and on light colored headliners as is the case in many vehicles, that clean spot will really stand out.

THANKS again,you guys do this more than me.I think i'll stay away from them IF possible.like you say about the "clean" spot,would'nt want it to look all streaky.The most cleaning i'll stick with is carpets/mats,side dr panels,seats.BUT,why i'm here any problems with seats[cloth] that i should worry about? you've been very helpfull!

im with 2hotfrd, i stay away from them unless the customer specifically ask for ,ad after warning them of what could happen i proceed with caution. like he said what you end up with is thsat clean spot,and the rest well you get the picture

It is the big trim piece that covers the interior of the roof in your car. Usually is made out of preformed cellulose material with a fuzzy fabric (hense, the topic here in how to clean it)
You know, just sit on your car and look up

We use a non-Meguiars product for cleaning headliners, its "velour cleaner" made by Sprayway. It is made for cleaning headliners and upholstery. It foams and sticks where it is sprayed. We just mist it on and blot it off with a microfiber rag. I am not sure if there is a Meguiars alternative...
