  • Leather Problem..any ideas

While detailing a 1999 Ford F350 today, this happened to the center front seat. I had no other problems with the rest of the seats, and I cleaned them as I have cleaned other leather in the past, with APC. Once I noticed this problem I also tried Lexol with the same result.

The seat actually "sheded" and the sheddings seemed to be pigmented......

    Any ideas.................

Perhaps try using Gold Class leather cleaner and conditioner? Or have you tried that yet?

It looks like that the pigment is coming off. Most cars in the last X years basically have leather "painted," as opposed to dying them. If the pigment is coming off (7 year old car, may have not been maintained well, etc., causing the pigment to no longer adhere), then the only thing you can do is re-dye the leather.

But definitely don't take my word for it!!!

looks like it was dyed already

If the color coming off is revealing another color layer as it looks in the pictures, my guess is the seat has been re dyed already and that is failing. I have seen the dye last very well but there is a wide range of skill and environmental variables involved in having seats dyed in the aftermarket. Please post if you find a fix.

          No fix.....

It appears that whatever the finish was, it did in fact fail and come off during cleaning. Fortunately the owner was not that concerned about it.

What sucked was that I did my normal cleaning process, and even tested before cleaning. I only had the problem on that one seat.

          Lesson learned....

Many times only one seat is sprayed, to fix driver seat wear it is common, or a scratch or cig. burn. Glad to hear the owner was cool about it.
