Does Scotch guard really work on the fabric inside a car? And how often do you have to use it?

That's a really good question and one I've had.

I bought a couple cans of SG that I was going to use on the carpet floor mats. When I read the instructions on the can of SG it said not to use it on carpets. I wound up putting the cans of SG back on the shelf and there they sit.

Any one know about how or if this stuff can be safely used?

ive used it on all my cars....one of the first things i did after buying my pt cruiser last year.....ive had good results.....its protection against small spills, drips etc......dont expect it to keep that giant slurpee you dropped on the flooor from soaking in....
i got mine from the auto section of wal-mart....its scotch guard protector/ fabric and upholstery.....even has a picture of a car on front.......
just follow directions on can, test in an inconspicuos place 1st, wipe w white cloth see if color comes up......then use 2 light coats rather than one thick coat.......it smells for a while so use it in well ventilated area.....and when you know ur not gonna be using the car.....afterwards u cant tell its there....till u spill something.....just wipe the spill off thenn......hope this helps.....

I use it several times a year on my vehicles, I am still up in the air if it really does anything. I have used it many years now in my vehicles and never really given it a good test, just gives me peace of mind. I don't allow anything to dangerous in my truck anyway, just water or pop in a SEALED container no eating/smoking/whatever! Am I crazy?

Howdy all,

After being in the Army, and in the field quite a bit (we used Scotchguard even when it went out of style ). I feel compelled to throw my two cents worth in.

Scotchguard is great when applied correctly, the best analogy I can think of to describe it's usefulness, is when we used it on a large canvas tent (GP medium to you other ole army types) that, in the dark of night, looks like a planetarium from the inside. A couple of cans of that stuff later, along with torrential rains; We stayed as dry as a scorpion in the desert.

Scotchguard really can be used on any sort of fabric, but like previously posted, you should really test it out on an area that is inconspicuous. Spray just enough of it to get the material wet, it will dry into the fabric on it's own without needing to "work it in".

I have used it on all my cars that I have owned since '95. To get a good thorough protection, I applied it about 3 separate times. I'd also recommend covering up your dash or any other parts of the car you do not want to accidentally apply Scotchguard to. Make sure you use good ventilation, of course. Scotchguard is not meant to repel water/liquids indefinitely but it buys you quite a bit of time to get a towel or napkin to dry the spill up without staining your interior.

Some years back, I spilled nearly half a can of soda onto the front seat of my car. I was able to safely pull off of the freeway a few miles down the road and clean the mess up without any sort of stain on the seat.

I've rambled on enough, I hope this helps someone out. And I hope I've covered all the topics brought up.

Hey,

I can not answer Mike's question, but I have used it for years and will continue using the stuff!

About 9 years ago, I just bought a brand new Ford Ranger 4x4. Beautiful truck!!! I was coming home from work when I decided to stop at McRonchies Drive-thru for some food. Anyway, I left with food and a Super sized Cola sitting in my console's cupholder. I was just around the corner from home when a Taxi decides to pull a U-turn. BAM! Nailed me hard! The Super size Cola went flying, all over the interior!!! What a mess. I cvould still drive the truck home and decided to try and clean the carpet. Well, I am really glad that I had Scotch Guarded the interior as it came right off! So, yep, I am a believer!

I did The Mats and carpet of my Miata quite thoroughly in January...

I hope this pic shows half the mat pressure washed, and the top edge beading overspray, after 5 months. It a different brand of fabric protector, but the basic flourocarbon formula.

So...? As far as I know it is still available - or at least similar stuff is, like Auto Armor which the dealer wanted to use in my new car but I deleted it from the list because I didn't want them doing the paint sealer /"glaze". So here I am trying to find out how messy it is when you spray it, and I find this! :0
