  • Results: Another Chrysler Van

Process: took about 2 hours...about 1 hour too long imo
    wash
    800 grit 3m
    1000 grit 3m
    2000 grit Meguiars
M105 on 3" wool cutting pad
PlastX on 3" foam polishing pad
    NXT

Tips...just get Meguiars sanding papers...the 3m stuff wrinkled up on me really easily

Driver After what a crappy tape job, eh? It don't like to stay put when it gets wet...

Passenger Before 1 This light was the hardest. I had to put lots of passion behind the 800 grit to smooth it out satisfactory - and still couldn't get it 100%..

I would guess so, I bet she was super happy after that. Is it key to start out with the 800?? I wouldn't think there was that much difference from it and 1000..i'll have to look into it. looks great!!

            Re: Results: Another Chrysler Van

I actually started w/ 2k (least aggressive 1st, right?) and it helped, but when I used the M105 and PlastX they just didn't give the results that I wanted. So, I hit it w/ the 1k, 2k, m105, PLastx and I wasn't satisfied. So, I dropped back and punted w/ the 800, 1k, 2k, m105, Plastx and got way better results. On the passenger it actually took lots of work w/ the 800 to get the results I wanted.

It might have been better if I could have found some 500 grit locally instead of 800, but I was in a pinch and 800 was the lowest I could find.

              Old thread resurrection time!!!

I've been having difficulty removing the clear protective coating from Chrysler vehicles, which is the main reason any Chrysler vehicle has crappy looking headlamps. Working on a PT Loser right now, and getting the lens itself immaculate is cake (Using Meguiars Heavy Duty Headlight kit), it's getting the old protective coating off that's getting to me. Would using a strong solvent like acetone help me get that **** off without damaging the integrity of the plastic that is the headlamp lens? Been going after it with 600 wetsand, and it's working, but it's just taking too long. Tempted to try lighter fluid, acetone, mineral spirits, even paint stripper (but can't screw up this customer vehicle). Curious to see if anyone else has any solutions for this to make the process simpler and faster.

If no one chimes in, on my next trip to the junkyard I'm gonna buy several old Chrysler headlights and try different things until I can determine what works the best with no damage to the lens. Yes, I will share my results.
