  • Where do I even think about beginning?

The thread title says it all. Any basic help or suggestions to help me clean this thing up? I've taken it to the coin-op and hosed it down (pulled the filter off and bagged the end of the intake first ) but that's all I've done so far. Didn't seem to help much. I think some painting might be necessary.

    Any thoughts are much appreciated.

I started engine detailing a few weeks ago.
    I really love it.
Just cover up any electrical stuff though.

It would probably look a lot better if you dressed it after washing.

Re: Where do I even think about beginning?

I like to pick out a single item or item and work on it until it's looking good. There's alot going on in the engine bay and it can seem overwhelming.

              Here's my approach:

              1. Remove parts that are in the way and come off easily (Air intake, battery, etc)
              2. Work on 1 part at a time:
              - Air intake
              - valve covers
              - PS pump and bracket
              - Intake manifold
              - timing chain cover
              - headers
              - oil pan
              - hoses
              - etc

I find that breaking the job down into smaller logical steps helps immensely. Also, I like to work top to bottom.

After the initial degreasing, I like to use cleaner wax on painted and metal parts for it's ability to remove dirt and grease from the pores. I'll follow that up with metal polish on on metal surfaces. Dressing the hoses and plastic definitely makes a big difference.

              Good luck

Yeah, I had the valve covers all cleaned up an painted... but then last time I bled the brakes, my helper didn't put the cover on the resevoir before pumping, and it spewed all over the left-side cover. Took the paint right off. You can see where I touched it up, it doesn't match quite right for some reason.
