  • Engine detailing for dummies

    Ladies/ Gents

I just got a Ferrari 360. I have read all messages related to engine detailing, but I am still somewhat confused...

The engine in my car looks good, but what do I need to do to keep it looking that way? I do not want to play with water rather wipe everything off.

What I need are some simple steps to help me keep the engine bay in good condition as well as what products I need to buy.

    Sincerely,

    Stig (Norway)

I would use the APC to clean it, then All Season or Hyper Dressing after that.

First, seeing as how this is your first post,

      Welcome to Meguiar's Online!

Next, besides the advice AeroCleanse has posted, here's another suggestion...

Take inventory of the different surfaces in the engine compartment such as plastic, paint, aluminum, chrome, etc., then find the matching product for wiping each surface clean, for example if the surface is painted you can use Quick Detailer to carefully wipe this surface clean.

Quik Detailer can actually be used on most surface if all they need is light cleaning, so if you wipe the engine compartment down often it should always only need light cleaning.

Then to maintain the different surfaces in your engine compartment again take inventory of the different surfaces in the engine compartment and then match your products to your surface, for example if you have black plastic components you can use Trim Detailer to maintain that new look after wiping the surface clean. For painted surfaces you can use a light cleaner/wax like Meguiar's Cleaner/Wax and for polished metal surfaces you can use Hot RimsĀ® Mag & Aluminum Polish.

Well if you are looking to do it by hand invest in a few spray bottles and alot of microfiber rags. i use the cheap ones you can buy in bundles for the engine bay. You will need some APC and some super degreaser for parts that look bad but im sure you wont need the super degreaser on your ferrari because like you said it already looks good. Then i prefer hyper dressing but that is up to you. Have one ragged soaked with apc for wiping areas then have a bottle with water in it to help rinse and wipe off with a different rag. Always turn to a new rag once one has become a little dirty so you dont end up rubbing greae on other parts and doubling your work. Doing it this way will take a little longer but is good on water sensitve engine bays. with the spray bottle with water it helps being able to pin point where you want to rinse and not flood everthing in the process and you can also use this process for touch up and maintaining to help keep your engine looking like new. Hope this helps

remember to use the least aggressive aproach...If you can afford a Ferrari, you should be able to afford the products to keep it up. As Mike mentioned, using a QD (matter of fact I really like interior QD for this) will be your best bet. You will keep your engine dust free, it will look awesome.
