My cars are both 13 months old. If you look under the hood they're pretty close to showroom condition, at least on the top, visible surfaces. All I've ever done is after each wash job I pop the hood and wipe them off with the same towel I used on the door jams. If I used some sort of detailer, e.g. APS or ASD, that would probably take it up a level, but most people would think they look perfectly fine now. I do this after every wash... not every 2nd or 3rd.

Best way to approach BMW's engines would be APC, or APC+ spray directly on an old terry towel that you are willing to throw away. You don't want to soak the engine, believe me, I've done it once on g/f's BMW, engine oil light sensor came on. Luckily the car was under warranty, you don't wanna pay that bill, german cars are extremely expensive for repairs...
I would cover the DSC module with foil. Start the car let the engine get WARM but not hot. Run it just 2-3 minutes. Wett the engine with a steady stream of water, Spray APC Or Super Degreaser, let it sit for a minute, aggitate with brushes and towels, hose off, dry with towel, start car let the engine run 10 minutes or so until water is dry, then spray with Hyperdressing.
