  • Detailing Certification and Training

Last week I attended an I-CAR training course in Wausau Wisconsin on detailing. I-CAR is a certification program for auto body technicians. I thought the course was very good; some of the material covered was paint correction immediately after the vehicle has been repainted.
While most of the vehicles we work on do not fall into this category, it did give some insight to how a vehicle is painted and what needs to be done afterwards. We passed around painted panels with paint concerns and discussed how to correct them. I would say 50% of the course covered things I already knew but it was still very valuable. The best part was stain removal, and how to use cleaners with varying degrees of (ph) to remove stains. Most of the students were dealership detailers, with a couple of insurance company people there also. One thing the instructor stressed is how important the detailer is in a dealership or body shop, because they are the last person to handle a vehicle before the customer receives it, and makes the lasting impression of a business.

The course was 4 hours long and you will receive a certificate for attending; they also have a trim and hardware course that covers things like moldings and pinstripes.
Most of the products the instructor had were Meguiars.

    Hi Phil,

Thanks for passing this along. I'm glad to see the Instructor stress the importance of the role the detailer plays for dealerships and body shops, now if we can only raise their status, respect and pay level... that would be something...

Huh? Status? Respect? what are those.... never heard of them! (at least in a body shop environment; the one time I had some work done, and told them I'd do the buffing out since I detail myself, they kinda sneered at me like "oh, whoopie... a detailer"

They don't care about the minimum wage junkies they employ as detailers. In fact it seems their overall impression seems to be that a good detailer is overrated.

Doesn't that course allow you to get ASE Certified?

I thought Mike was talking about it awhile back.

was thinking about doing it just to get the patch for my uniforms

Hi, where is the class in Riverside?

I live only 60 miles from Riverside. I don't really care about the certification, but a class might be interesting.

As far as detailing goes, chances are good you have more experience than the instructor, Superior Shine.

I went to www.i-car.com and looked up the schedule. I think I'll attend one of the courses myself, there is a detailing course here on LI on 6/6 if anyone else is interested.

Also interesting is that they have an online course entitled "Vehicle Preparation and Delivery" which covers detailing.
