Re: Knowing when to hire help
I am in the same boat you are my friend. I live and work in a very high dollar area, most customers will not even ask about pricing, but rather tell me what exactly they would like done. I am open 7 days a week, sunrise to sunset. My wife does all of our clerical work, customer service, as I detail the vehicles. I have made a huge name for myself, not only because of the results I can produce, but because of one key thing... I offer something that no other detailer in my area offers. Remeber that detailing is 20% detailing and 80% business. I cant count how many times that has been brought up, but its true. All of my competition is open 5 days a week 8-6 and only by an appointment on the Saturday. Mobile Detailing is all about accomidating your customers busy schedule. How in the world is having a banks hours doing that? This is why Im open on the weekends and at anytime. Eventually, I might higher help, but for now, Ill keep racking in a ton of cash. Also, but not having so many employees and liabilities, I produce quality work at my own pace. Another reason you are so busy, is because you most likely put out a very good result. The other guys with multiple employees are the ones that never get consistent results. I had a new client tell me she never had the same person detail er car twice with her last company, and that sometimes the car was done better than the other. Some detailers are better than others, as are some emplyees. It is my understanding, in my short time in this business, that detailing as a career takes 110% ALL of the time. I wouldnt trust my vehicles in anyone elses hands, and I wouldnt trust my clients vehicles in any one elses hands either. If I ever have to hire some help, it would most likely be close family, and only after they have gone through extensive detailing training. This business is rough, but extremely rewarding not only in pay, but in your craftmanship as well! Hang in there!
P.S - showtime, if you ever would like to talk about this sorta thing, shoot me a private message, im in the same situation you are

For the guys who have been doing this awhile, at what point did you hire help?
I'm getting to the point where I'm working 7 days a week 10hrs a day, and that's just detailing. I'm also an Xpel dealer and am starting two HUGE accounts next month and I'm hoping to get a Megiuar's distributorship. (I don't screw around)
I can manage everything now just because I'm a workaholic. I'm a little weary of hiring somebody due to all the insurance that's involved with it. Not only that, I need somebody who can produce my quality of work, which also will cost more than your average buffer jockey. But I also realize I can't get bigger without employees. I've only been in business for myself for 3 months and never thought things would take off this fast.
