  • Got a Q with gel coats?

I've have this boat to detail that has some Heavy oxidization on it. What I’m wondering is, since I don’t really detail that many boats yet, will the detailers and Pro. line get the job done or should I use all marine orientated products since they are formulated towards gel coats. I’m thinking of using 85 then, stepping down to 83 or something depending on any hazing from 85. I'ts been a few years since I've detailed any boats and I was using NON-MEGS products at the time (not my choice either). Either way I plan on using a marine wax I just didn’t want to invest in to many products if I didn’t have to.

Any help will be a great appreciated.

    Hey Chubs,

I would suggest using the dedicated Meguiar's Marine products.

Normally, I would start off with most gel coats with either #44 Color Restorer or #49 Oxidation Remover and a rotary buffer with a W-8006 or W-7006 pad.

If the boat has a lot of oxidation, I would suggest using Meguiar's M-67 One Step Compound with either a W-7006 Cutting pad or W-8006 Polishing pad and the rotary. Always work with the least aggressive product first.

One trick that has worked for me is using the #67, W-7006 Cutting Pad and a PC set to speed 5. This combo works really well, and leaves the surface super glassy!!

    I hope this helps!

Thanks for the quick reply Tim.
I think I'll try to 67 and PC trick. If I do have to go with the 44 or 49 would I have to go over that with a lighter polish to get rid of any hazing or do they leave a pretty smooth finish with the rotary.

        Hey Chubs,

I have found that when using the rotary and the aforementioned products (#44 or #49), the finish will be ready for a last step product.

Try the PC trick, you'll like it!!
