  • Insurance Shopping

I've got an appointment Thursday evening with a friend who sells insurance. I actually detailed his wife's car last weekend, they both were VERY happy with the results!

Anyway, enough bragging. From what I understand, I need to be looking at General Liability and Garage Keepers. Are there any other coverages I'll need, or will GL and GK cover me for everything? I'm planning on offering pickup and delivery for my customers' cars, and for the time being, I'm working out of my garage. I'm hoping to quickly build up a clientele that will allow me to find a shop to work from.

The next question would be, how high should my limits be? I'm thinking $1,000,000 for GL, and $100,000 for GK. Does this sound like enough coverage?

+1, I am interested too. What kind of insurance would you need if you were a Mobile detailer, just GL?

If I remember right, last week I was quoted $483 for same package through State Farm (just wanted to see all of my options before I start doing this on the side).

That's not too bad. Better safe than sorry especially in today's "I'll sue you!" society.

              Re: Insurance Shopping

Just an update- Here is what I was quoted.

              $1 million Liability, $100,000 Garage Keepers- $1008/Year

              $100,000 Liability, $20,000 Garage Keepers- $457/Year

              $300,000 Liability, $50,000 Garage Keepers- $671/Year

I was thinking before that the $1 million/$100,000 was what I would probably want to get, but I've had 2nd thoughts. I'm going to be starting out working out of my garage, just myself, so I'm probably only going to have one or two cars at a time in my possession, and I'm not planning on doing any Lamborghinis starting out. I am going to offer pick up and delivery for a fee, so I'll be driving customers' cars. For just starting out, do you guys think I could get by safely with $300,000 Liability and $50,000 Garage Keepers until I get a shop and have more property (and hopefully more cars) to protect?

One other thing- I'm going to look into forming either an LLC or a Corporation, so my personal property would be protected in the event of a lawsuit.

You may want to consult a business attorney who specializes in Business law. Should be able to find one for a 30 minute free consultation and get all your questions answered. You can start a LLC or a Corp and if you have employees they can sue the business and or sue the employee. Now, if you are the only person they can sue the business and or sue you. You may want to check into putting your assets into a trust where you are protected!
