  • Federal tax I.D

hi everyone i have a quick question i work for a dealer in southern california in the parts dept. well me and another friend want to start detailing for them as a side job/weekends the cars are brand new so the paint on the cars is pretty good but they only pay wit P.O(purchase order) so the form requires a federal tax i.d. number so they can pay us but will that affect my taxes or will i have problems with the IRS i might just be doing two cars per week $150 per car.

It shouldn't be a problem, but with a Federal tax ID you might have to do more like actually submit paperwork with your city/state to become a business, and you'll have to list you and your buddy as employees and pay each other, etc.

        Re: Federal tax I.D

I looked online at the Federal ID website, and it told me that for what I want to do (detailing on the side, no employees just myself) I don't need a Federal ID number.. However, when I go to my state's business website (Oklahoma) the first step they say to do is to get a Federal tax ID number.. so, I'm not sure what to do. I need to talk to someone that knows.

Another word for federal tax id is your social security number.

TO become legal and obtain a business license (at least in IL) you need a fed tax is. You can get it for free from the IRS website... so keep that in mind
