  • vehicle pick up and delivery?

I don't plan on going mobile, but I also know that some people might find it inconvenient to drop off their car and then come pick it up... what if I offer as part of my service to pick up their car and then deliver it when it's done?? Would regular garage keeper's insurance cover this? or would I have to make sure my auto insurance covers it?

Tulsa isn't very big, I could easily be from where I live to the other side of town in 15 minutes or less.

Funny you should bring this up now. I'm actually doing a couple of details and the owners are out of town for the weekend, So I will be picking up their two toyotas this weekend and the Lexus' the following.

That being said, heck, add a surcharge! Unless theyre a loyal customer... But remember that extra risk you add when YOU drive THEIR car.

Your own policy _might_ excluded coverage, you'd need to check. Sometimes there is a business use exclusion but it might be limited to livery.

Garage keepers policy with liability and collision/comprehensive coverage would certainly provide coverage for this. I'd think this would be cost prohibitive.

But keep this in mind... do you know of any businesses that pick up cars and deliver them back? I can't think of any.

You have a good point. In Alberta you would need an AMVIC lic and a garage policy plus a dealer plate to drive unregistered vehicles back and forth (say from a dealer). If the car you are polishing was registered you could drive it on their insuance but you would be taking a risk if something did happen to their car. I use to pick up customers cars but now i just offer them a ride to work or home and pick them up when I'm finished.

I would think that the liability would out way any benifit you would get by picking up a customers car.

I think the extra expense of the insurance would out weight the benefits. Certainly the liability without insurance would greatly out weight any benefit. It's not just the vehicle being driven but it's any other property damage or injury caused as a result of the use. While many personal lines auto policies don't exclude coverage for this type of use, some do.. and it's hard to tell when it would be excluded and when it would not. Unless a person has confirmation from their carrier or agent, I'd recommend assuming it's not covered under their personal policy.

Maybe not your detailing business insurance, but check with you vehicle insurance company. I am covered in whatever car I drive, for example. I'm sure there's different rules for business use, but might be a place to check as well. I say this in that I'm assuming you are going to pick them up as in drive them, not trailer them.
