Re: Working for dealership. Need help with developing pay hours!

    A little update:

The service director agreed to the proposed hours. I had a pretty good sales pitch complete with an excel spreadsheet showing hypothetical costs for him and the dealership before and after the change.

The four other guys were excited to say the least about the pay increase! I am glad I did it but I quit on Friday. They work on flag hours (5 hours to detail an SUV for example no matter if it takes you 4 or 7 you get paid the same). The problem with this is if there are no cars then you dont make any money and they expect you to stay at the shop from 9-6. It just wasnt worth it to me as the other day I was there from 9-11:30 without making a dime.

Anyways...thanks for the input and help! Im sure the others that are working are glad they got a few extra hours for each car they do!

Ask the GM if it makes good business sense to have the the last person in the dealership to touch a car before the customer see's it ,to be the lowest Paid.

Things that make you go Hum.

I worked for a dealer for 3 years.the only good you would ever get out of that is practice and building up speed.they always want a good detailing for a small price.I make far better hourly rates from my customers than from the dealer.

            SHYNEMAN,

I completely agree with that. The service director would stress to us how important it is that the cars are PERFECT when they arrive to the customer. He spoke about how, for used cars, the condition of the car and quality of the detail can make or break the sale of the car. It makes no sense to me why they would try to screw the detailers over when they have one of the most important jobs. For instance I worked 26 hours in three days but only got paid 12.5? Makes me want to start my own business again...

I worked for a dealership for 8 years and will never do that again. They care about one person ... Themselves...

I work in a different industry but had a similar situation.

How it worked there was that if I had a customer I was working on for them, they would pay me $X an hour. (which was a decent rate)

If there is no customer, then I receive a lower rate of pay per hour $Y.

On my pay stub it would show up like a comission. My base pay was the same, but if my work was billable to someone else I would get an hourly bonus. You may be able to get some money per hour for being at ready. (or work out a deal where you do some other work when there are no cars)

Most of my dealers want it done quick and cheap before good.. want it to look good for 2 weeks and don't care what I use.
