No small claims expert Nappers, but it sounds pretty spot-on to me. Good advice!

Re: Help Customer Wont Pay!
I've noticed in our court system here in rural No. California, the burden of proof is to prove that you did the service and did not get paid for the service.
Bring with you date and time you did the detail, any phone records (cell phones are great for every detailed call), what products you used etc. Before and after pictures would help especially with a time stamp on the picture.
The site 3Fitty gave you is a good site, it has the forms needed for small claims in California as well as any other court action.
California Courts: Forms
SC-150 is the directions of some sort....
I'm not sure on the forms you need to fill out. I was a Court Bailiff, so....I just listened and made faces at people like 3fitty(those attorneys I was friends with at least
).
I'm sure when he is served with a summons of some type, he may come clean. I suggest also, that you keep your court date then dismiss without predjudice if he pays. I say this because if he pays you and the funding is not there (check) you can re-open case. Dismiss the case with predjudice you cannot, unless I got it backwards, been a while. 3Fitty may chime in.

Re: Help Customer Wont Pay!
As an aside...
It's not the I'm "sue-happy" (or maybe I am), but the OP was wronged. He provided a service at an agreed upon price.
He fulfilled his end of the bargain and it bothers me (on principle) that this guy won't pay. So, frankly that amount of money is of no consequence to me, but the principle is worth pursuing.
Put another way, if you walk into a store and take something without paying, we call it theft and it can land you in the sin-bin. Yet guys like this slug, just think they can ignore you.... well, homey don't play that.

I feel bad for the OP! That was a low thing the customer did to him. I hope I gave the OP a bit of a chuckle. For something like this, a little humor can't hurt. Personally, I hope he gets his money from that slob.

I did a bit of research for you into filing a claim in a California SC Court.
I think your case is an easy one. Here is what I would do. Commence the action and make your allegations (ie: when the work was performed, the agreed upon price, etc...). If you don't have any pics of the work this time around, bring some from the last time around. This shows you are a reputable business person and have worked for this guy before.
If he claims "he never did the work", it won't be believeable.
His next defense would probably be about price or performance. He might say, "we agreed upon 50 bucks" or whatever. In this case, get some price quotes from local detailers to show what the market value is for detailing services, just to show the judge that your rates were not beyond the market.
My guess is that once he gets your complaint, he'll pay.
If he doesn't, get a judgment and immediately serve it on him (usually by certified mail is okay). Once you've served him, different States have different rules, but I have found the easiest way to get your money is to put a lien on his tax return. I've done it in New York State and in Michigan and it is relatively easy and something he can't do anything about.
Also, if you want to be really nasty, once you get the judgment, report it to one or all of the three credit reporting agencies. You'll basically ruin his credit for the next 7-10 years.
