  • Looking for your answers to my FAQ page

As I stated a week or so ago, I left Lexus where I was a car wash and vacuum guy for over a year to focus on other aspects of my career choice. However, since I love detailing so much, I have decided to open a detail business to make a little extra money on the side. I have finished my packages and pricing, and I have also made a Frequently Asked Questions page when I hand my brochure out to potential customers. I have answered these questions myself, but I would really, really like to have all of your input as to how you would answer these questions. Thanks!

    1. What is the difference in your basic car wash package (Wash, Vacuum, Glass Cleaned, Interior Wiped Down) ($30) and me just running my car through a $10 car wash?

    2. What is a clay bar, what does it do, and why use one?

    3. I have a lot of scratches, if I just buy the Xtreme package (cheapest package with wax), will the wax get rid of them?

    4. I have a really deep scratch all the down to the metal. Can you get this out?

    5. What is the difference between a polish and a wax?

    6. Why should I upgrade to a Synthetic Sealant over a wax? Is there really that much of a difference?

    7. Why should I let you detail my car instead of taking it to my manufacturer’s dealership? Do you do anything differently?

Keep in mind that even though I haven't been on here long, and you guys haven't seen any of my work yet, I really do know my stuff, and how to treat and prevent any defect to a vehicle. I'm not trying to toot my own horn, as I'm sure a lot of you are just as good, if not better than I am. Just want you guys to take into consideration I'm not just some average Joe trying to make a buck. I have the same passion for this stuff as you guys do. Thanks again, and I look forward to reading your responses!

At almost all of the "run through" car washes they either use super high pressure sprayers with harsh chemicals so they don't touch your car. Those chemicals will do bad things over time to your cars paint, trim, wheels, etc. At the ones where they actually wash your car with a wash mitt, the water and mitt they are using might be a week old, maybe just washed a car that just came back from the desert, you never know. They don't take the time to change the water and mitt out for each new car that comes through. They also usually use those red shop mechanic towels to dry your car, those towels have no cushion to them and do nothing good for your finish.

If you do it, you should be able to control what your doing as far as wash mitts, drying towels, etc.

    2. What is a clay bar, what does it do, and why use one?

Watch this video on How to Clay Bar, it should answer almost all your questions. Read through these threads as well.

    3. I have a lot of scratches, if I just buy the Xtreme package (cheapest package with wax), will the wax get rid of them?

A wax will not remove scratches, unless it is a Cleaner Wax, and even a cleaner wax will not remove the deep scratches that a dedicated scratch remover will. Some waxes might mask or cover the scratches so you can't see them, but that doesn't mean they are removed from the paint.

    4. I have a really deep scratch all the down to the metal. Can you get this out?

No, once the scratch is down to the metal, there is no paint in that area. To remove a scratch you have to remove the paint around it...What it means to remove a scratch out of anything...

    5. What is the difference between a polish and a wax?
A polish is a product that adds oils to the paint in order to make the paint look better. A wax is something that protects that better looking paint and retains the look of it after a polish, or just after a wax.

    6. Why should I upgrade to a Synthetic Sealant over a wax? Is there really that much of a difference?

In my opinion, what ever you think protects and looks the best is what you should use. Try a couple different products out to find what one looks the best to you.

    7. Why should I let you detail my car instead of taking it to my manufacturer’s dealership? Do you do anything differently?

The work that you'll get out of the better detailers in the country is going to be ages about the dealerships work. The majority of dealerships just want to get your car done and out of there as fast as possible. Not all, but the majority. A professional detailer, with a proven background, will sometimes take 2 days to take your car to the best it can possibly be.
