  • What should I charge?

I might have a exterior only detail coming up. And guess what, it is another 03 Black Mach1. He is looking for the exterior to be buffed and waxed. He said it has swirls. I had a price sheet on all my details but that was for the whole detail. What would you guys charge (hourly, or fixed price). The paint is in all great condition except the swirls.

Since you are used to detailing the Mach 1, and pretty much know how long it should take you to do the exterior, you should have a good idea of how long it will take you. If the car is swirled up charge by the hour as it will probably take you longer to do this one than your own. Think of a fixed price, divide it by how long it will take you to do your own car, get your hourly rate.

I'd say $200-300 depending on how many buffing steps needed.

What is the customer looking for out of the detail?

He hasn't emailed me back yet. But he just wants his Mach buffed to get the swirls out. I was thinking of 14.00 an hour. If I remeber correctly it took me about 5 hours to get the ouside down on mine.So if this takes 5 hours at 14/hour I would make 70 bucks. I would be happy with that. That is about what I make in two full days at work. Thanks for the help guys.

Charge according to your level of detailing. If you feel you can do as good, or even better of a job as the professional detailers in your area, who are charger hundreds of dollars for an exterior, than don't sell yourself short.

I wouldn't go less than $100. Like Rasky said, "don't cut yourself short"

In my market, we'd charge $165, plus $30 black surcharge.

              I'm just sayin...

you guys are right. I am going to charge about $110. I am still getting used to using a DA which is why I am going to go to a Ford wrecking yard and find a old hood with a CC paint job that is in alright condition. Thanks guys. My detailing is good but not near as good as others on this forum.
Thanks for you help guys. I really appriciate the help.

Glad you decided to up your price. Never sell yourself short. I think it is a great idea to get a practice hood for this. It should ease your fears about using the G100 tremendously. Good luck.

                      Re: What should I charge?

If I were doing it for $ I would certainly check my local market as a first step and find out what steps/products their work involves.

In my area I would have to call three places. One production place on the main drag through town, one detail shop in another nearby town and the third, I guy that appears to do the work out of his garage.

Know your market, but "evaluate your customer as much or more than the paint" (paraphrased from one of the Mikes)

I have checked the local market. The local pro gy around me charges 300-500 for a full detail so I think $110 to $130 I think I would be in the right range, just for the outside.

                          100 dollars sounds good.
If the customer wanted to go to the pro shop they go for around 200-300 in the great state of Indiana.

I have a fender, A spare thunderbird fender but its single stage paint and I like to work on that kind to tell you the truth. I will be getting a practice hood froma Ford wrecking yrad. They seem to be the cheapest. Reason why I start cheap is that I do not want to scare customers away.
