I've only done friends and family members cars although I am looking to do weekend detailing in my town with some small advertisements.

My question to those more knowledgable than myself: Do you think it is more economical to charge a client by the time spent detailing or set up a package price ?
    Your help is greatly appreciated.
Why not offer a package price that's based on the how much time you think it will take to complete the job?

For example, since an SUV is going to take longer to detail then a small compact car, it's only reasonable that the owner of a larger SUV will be willing to spend more money (for the same basic package) as compared to what a compact car owner would want to spend.

You could basically figure that a larger vehicle would take about 25% more time to complete than a mid-size car, so the price should be about 25% higher. And since a compact car would take about 25% less time than a mid-sized car, that price should be about 25% lower.

      Larry,

Why not offer your detailing services to your family and friends for free? That way they can show their friends the results of your good work. It's a great way to market yourself and the rewards are certainly worth the minimal investment in your time and supplies.
