  • Question about clear coat

I am working on a 1997 Toyota Camry (Black) and when I took a medium cut foam pad to it with #83 I have some left over black color on my pad. Does this mean that there is definitely no clear coat on the car?

    Re: Question about clear coat

If the car started out as a car with a clear coat finish then having black pigment show up on the face of your pad is a pretty good indicator you've worked through the clear layer at least somewhere on the car.

      Re: Question about clear coat

Some cars have tinted clears, maybe this car?

At this point, wipe the car clean and move the car into some natural sunlight and see if you can see any areas that look noticeably dull or flat compared to other areas.

        Re: Question about clear coat

I didn't see any dull areas, it shines very well. I mostly used the PC on this car because I just bought one to see what they were like. I got black pigment on the pad while using a PC.

Could the car have been repainted? Could be a single stage paint. I know Toyota didn't put it on the lot with single stage, but if it was in an accident it could have been repainted.

How black is it? Like extremely solid black, or just a little?

If its just a little, was one panel ever repainted?

              Re: Question about clear coat

It wasn't a lot of black on the pad. Maybe a couple panels could have been repainted. I guess I could do a test spot on different panels to see if i get color from some panels and not the others.

                Another thought...

If there is any type of rubber / plastic molding on the car, and you barely run over the edge, you will have some light black as well on the pad....

                  Re: Question about clear coat

If this was your first time really detailing it, it could just be extra dirty...

You should find the same thing if you work by hand, just put some on a foam applicator, and go around real quick if you felt like it, and havent waxed yet.

                  Edit:

Yes, trim is a good idea as well.

                    Re: Question about clear coat

Here's another possibility, maybe it's overspray you're removing?

Use a white cloth and a white colored polish and check each panel by polishing the paint on each panel with the white cloth and white polish, after applying for a few seconds turn the cloth over and see if you're pulling color.

Let us know what you find out.
