Also, name what you do for the exterior of vehicle as for product steps, do you charge by hour of by job by the products used.

    Heres my rates ...

    (1) cars exterior waxed and buffed $50/ complete works inside out $100
    (2) trucks exterior $80 waxed and buffed $85/ complete works inside out total $135
    (3) vans/suv exterior waxed and buffed $100 /complete works inside out total $150

Am I to high priced or too low..

By buffed you mean swirl removing correct? If so way too low. If its just wash and wax then seems about right.

        Re: Detailing prices?

I price my services to .....

        1-completely cover my expenses

        2-put profit in my pocket

3-by what the market will bare.

Are prices range from $45 for our car wash up to $1000+ for paint correction.

I can't tell you if your too high or too low. Are you putting money in your pocket once all your expenses are paid for? If so your charging OK, If not you need to raise your prices.

          Re: Detailing prices?

In my market $25-$30 for a wash is about the limit. I offer a basic detail that includes:

          Interior Detail (no carpet/upholstery)
          Extract Floormats
          1 step cleaner wax (M66)
          Dress exterior trim & rubber
$95.00 for cars $125.00 for large vehicles.

To be honest I don't offer extreme paint correction becuase I havent developed that talent yet. I am capable of removing light defects with the DA but I find that most of my customers are more concerned about the interior of their vehicle.

So far this year I have been busy and those prices work for me.

I would think you are pretty low, but as Joe said it may be just right for your market. We charge 25/35 for car wash/interior cleanup 100/155 to add a one step wax, and 250/300 for full detail (minus major paint correction) and beyond that is an hourly rate.

I would say you are very low.If you pull out a buffer to correct paint defects then charge much more. The problem I see is most people will accept your prices because thats what most in and out wash places charge. If you produce quality then you need to charge more.Just my opinoin.

                Re: Detailing prices?

Wow (MAYBE) I'm cheap after reading everybody's post. Here In Michigan, the economy is slow, jobs are going somewhere but here. Theres detailing shops I'd say every 25 miles. My goal is to provide, the best I can give a customer and still be the lowest in my perimeter, thats the key to my success.

Like Superior Shine said, am I putting money in pocket after all is said and done. That is yet to be determined, as I'm opening my first detail shop on busy highway this April, any tips from you guys as far as drawing in clients, is always welcome thanks to all who posted in topic.. ...

                  Do you have formal training?

Have you joined the NAPDR (WWW.DETAILERSASSOCIATION.COM )??

Have you attended the ICA or Mobile tech expo to learn about the business???

If you answer no to any of these questions you need to step it up!

                      Re: Detailing prices?

There are many classes as well as one on one instruction that one can take.

Some product manufacturers offer them as well. Many can be had for free at the expos I posted about.

I am not a spokesman for anybody so I will not make a recommendation. Do an online search and you will find some.

Before I comment, I need clarification from your post.

When you say "buffed", are you referring to using a: Rotary buffer or a Dual Action Polisher like the Porter Cable or G100 or just an a regular orbital buffer? This is very important as it helps to gauge the level of paint correction that is available.

Also, how many years of buffing experience do you have? Have you wet sanded and buffed out a car before? What steps do you use for buffing a car?

I think the best way for you to get in this is to try to feel out the customers and your area.Ive been dealing with the public a long time and still am learning. Some people will pay $500.00 like its $5 because they love their car.And some want a new car for $50.Its not easy but you can only go up from here.I recomend you also practice more on friends vehicles to get more time under the belt.Because once you are paid for a Detail people act very different.Almost for got go the junkyard get some old trunk lids and practice wet sanding and buffing.

Anything beyond light correction will put one of my exterior details over $100, even for small cars. I try to keep my hourly rate as close to $40 an hour as possible and $60 an hour when one of my sons is working with me.
