Probably the best thing to do would be to either call or go to your City Hall and ask them what requirements must be met in order to start a Mobil Detailing Business and see what they provide you with.

    At a minimum, you'll want,

DBA form - This is a "Doing Business As" form
    Phone number
    Business card

Your local government can tell you what you'll need to do in order to start a legitimate mobil detaling business. Many people don't go down this road when they first start out and just get the business card printed and any checks they recieive they have made out to their first and last name so thay can cash them. If you have a check and it's made out to Mega-Gloss Mobile Detailing, then you won't be able to cash the check until you get a DBA and then open a Business Checking Account under the name "Mega-Gloss Mobile Detailing".

Make a couple of phone calls to the City Hall, perhaps your local Small Business Administration and even any local detailers; ask them what steps they had to take to start their business.

It sounds like you are basically involved in the hobby of automobile detailing. In that case you should not need to be licensed. However, at some point in the future, if you continue to gain more and more paying customers, then you will need to get registered as a business. For right now, it is only a hobby.

If he's charging money, he needs to follow whatever rules and regulations in his city/county.

He needs to check with business licensing and planning/zoning at city hall.

That is right, if you are charging for your services you are a business. Every city requires you to have a business license. You need to have insurance, being only 17 your parents are responsible for anything you do, wrong. You damage a car, they are responsible. You do bodily harm to someone, they are responsible.

What are you doing with the waste water from washing the car? This is illegal to dump it on the ground or into the storm drain. Against the Federal Clean Water act.

You need to set up a legitimate business or you and your parents could be in a heap of trouble should something go wrong.

Of course, we are careful, we do not intend for things to go wrong. That is why we have insurance. That is why you need to do things right and to get insurance. Talk with your parents about what I have told you.

Hey, that's one of the reasons I moved to Cody, Wyoming! No business licenses, no city business taxs, and for that matter .... NO STATE INCOME TAX.

I'm with YOU STG! It's stupid for a 17 year old kid to have to go through all that **** to wash a few cars. Sounds like he was going over to their houses and washing them in the driveway - that's against the Feds down there? Damn glad I live in NC, at least we still have a few people in charge with some common sense here. Meanwhile there's a few hundred thousand "quest workers" from south of the border, working without lincense, insurance, or paying taxes - now why the hell doesn't the imperial federal guv-ment do something about that?
