    Help,
We are prepping a minivan for sale, pretty straight forward, express detail.
The exterior was dull and oxidized so we decided to wash, light polish with M-80 Speed Glaze. We did a test section on the hood and found this application improved the looked markedly, however, there was not clear coat on the vehicle as we pulled red paint on the pad. So we did a light polishing followed by a coat of M-21. Nothing else was done and when completed the exterior looked great. We did have the vehicle for three days (customer didn't need vehicle and it has been raining non-stop). We did the polishing on the first day, applied the wax on day 2. Came in today to find this on the bumper. The bumper has shown no indication of any of this previously and was clean the day before.

Any ideas on what could have caused this? No other areas of the car showed any problems. This was pretty much across the bumper from headlight to headlight and only the area below the headlights.

I was able to remove a small amount of the discoloration by buffing with a rotary and M-85 but stopped as the paint was very thin. The bumper is plastic of course.

    Re: Paint Problem

Looks like it is failing. You might not have been able to tell under the oxidation, and failing paint can often be fixed for a day or two, but then it all comes back.

But you will get some other opinions as well I am sure from actual experts...

Looks like paint failure. did you start to pull red color from the car when detailing the bumpers? cuz as the pic looks, the car does have a clear.

if you were detailing other sections from the car and didn't pull red color, then it does have a clear coat system. if you pulled red color from all the car, then it's base coated.

did you ask the owner if he repainted the bumpers?

I belive it is his car seeing as he said they are prepping it to sell it.

And yah it looks like failure. My dads car has clear coat failure on roof and on the trunk. Gets to be common as the car ages.

          Thanks,

I'm not sure what is going on with this vehicle, we pulled paint everywhere, I asked the customer if they had it repainted and the answer was no, it was purchased used at Car-Max

            Update on problem.

Turns out the bumper (and probably the whole vehicle) was repainted. When we sanded the bumper, the original paint (clear coat included) was evident.
