  • Manual Transmission

I have done two cars in a row now for two different people that both had a manual transmission. Unforunately, I do not know how to drive one so I had to ask the owner to move the car for me . So, I am wondering, are there places in the US (specifically Texas) where I can rent a MT?

I am sure there are, just have to call around. AAA might even have driving class for manual transmissions. At least they did up here a few years ago.

Push the clutch peddle to the floor, place the transmission in the gear (according to the little diagram, R is for reverse and 1 is low gear for starting from a stop), push the throttle to the floor and quickly release the clutch peddle.

It takes practice. Find a freind with a neon or a like car and have him teach you. After about a half hour you will get the hang of it.

that won't work. it'll stall instantly.

unless you've mastered power shifting on the go, this will stall.

its a simualtenous (spelt wrong) action of both peddles.

            its not that hard though.

get a car, and ONLY practice first gear as the rest are a joke once the car is moving. its getting the car to move that's the battle.

            cheers

Then stop on a slight incline and do it all agian. Def. easier said than done.

Thats why said push the throttle all the way to the floor and rev the engine, jeeze you guys missed the joke!

In all seriousness, if you just need to move the car back and forth, you can do this with no throttle. Just release the clutch to the point where it starts to grab and hold it there. From her SLOWLY feed out the clutch (slower then you think) and it will slowly start to move foward at back. This is the point where most will stall it because the jump off the clutch. Don't do that, just slowly feed it out, real real slow. This will get you foward or backward.

You cant sort of know what you are doing with a customers car.... esp if they are standing right there. Definately need a bit of instruction, whether from a friend, or whatever.

TH0001, I caught it. I thought it was funny. Doesn't stall any of my cars, especially the Mustang. It'll just sit there and make lots of white smoke and noise for some reason.

FYI, cleaning rubber off of rear fenders is not fun. You miss a little specs and it makes a huge mess on pads and that panel.

Funny thing is that here in my country MOST cars are MT, but my mom has an auto, whenever I drive it I find myself braking with my left foot....

It is really not hard to learn. Here in Germany nearly every car has a MT.
And if 12 year old girls can learn to drive them everyone here should be able
But always remember: Let the clutch "come" slowly!!
